When I see stuff like this I try to think about “why” from the company’s perspective.

Why would they not want to take $5,000 for what is a software switch.

The only reason that I can come up with is that the only people that would buy the performance upgrade are those with heavier feet; like “I paid for the whole speedometer and I’m gonna use the whole speedometer!” And that must lead to more wear on something that Rivian has to pay for under warranty. And that thing must cost more than they make on the upgrade. So something mechanical and/or the battery?
The why is money. I'll never pay a dime for things that are artificially crippled just to sell it back to you because I have already paid for it. I'll keep hacking on it over the years and if I get past the artificial crippling then fine, if not it will never happen. If it is a true upgrade that requires something else, I will consider it, but the only way things that are already included but are artificially crippled will ever get used by me is via hacking around their stupid blocks. For example, the BMW paid heated seats thing... its already there, if I wanted heated seats I'd install my own switch on the dashboard and energize the circuit when I wanted heated. Unlocking more power is likely much more detailed, but I almost guarantee you its simply a voltage limiter in software that can probably be defeated just by modifying whatever sensor is monitoring current in to the motor. Cant wait to start beating on it if I end up getting one of these.

I sent a feedback to Rivian on why don’t they do a 15-30day trial on the performance upgrade (like they do with Connect + and Autonomy +). This way you can experience it and once the trail is over, then you can decide if it’s worth it.

I like that idea but if they do that, I hope it shows very clearly on the screen that either of those are in trial mode so that people don't trick second hand buyers into thinking it has it, and paying more because of that. Plenty of unscrupulous people out there that I can see taking advantage of buyers...

Some tuners for ICE vehicles do this as well. APR does it for German cars. You get 8 or 10 "drive hours" of time with the upgrade before it reverts back to stock. Well, at least you used to when I was looking at it years ago.
