While parked at my nearby RAN charger, I kept looking at the SOS button located on the ceiling, and wondered what happens if you push it. Does it call 9-1-1? Does it connect you to a Rivian assistant? I wasn't sure.

I finally got the guts to push the button and immediately a large red warning popped up on the screen. "CALLING EMERGENCY SERVICES SHORTLY" cameup and a 20 second countdown timer appeared. The alarm was piercing to my ears! I cancelled the call, but it made me wonder if someone has had to use the function yet. Anyone?

My emergency service calls for a dislocated shoulder were: ski patrol, climbing gym owner, REI kayaking class instructors, and an iPhone after stretching in bed. Haven’t needed any after getting my torn labrum fixed in 2022.

I was parked away from home and my frunk wouldn't close. It would come down and then open back up. I couldn't drive the truck that way.

I pushed the button to get roadside service. They came on and asked my emergency, After they confirmed no one was injured, they connected me to a service advisor. They explained that if I set the frunk to manual close, it would latch once closed by hand. That worked, I drove home and scheduled a mobile service tech to come out and adjust the frunk lid. I was able to drive the truck in the meantime with powered close turned off.

I have used it after witnessing an accident on the freeway. After several attempts to connect, I finally got a hold of 911 and was able to get EMS dispatched.

Interesting, I’ve learned something new. How do you switch the frunk lid to manual operation?

I tested mine a year ago when I got the truck. There was no warning message or tone, and I told the agent there was no emergency and that I was just testing the service on my brand new truck. She said "no problem" and asked if there was anything else she could help me with. I'm guessing this red alert and warning tone is an update because folks (or their kids) are abusing it.

@Runinova and others: Yesterday I was engrossed by driving on a rural expressway in a VERY heavy rainstorm. I slowed below 50 mph, and thought 4-way flashers would be appropriate.

I used two fingers to push where I thought the flasher button was. I got the flashers, but also the "SOS Call" warning.

My wife was amused at my awkwardness. I think the system worked well. My one suggestion for improvement: Make the various buttons so that they feel different from each other when touched.

Incidentally, my other rainstorm-visibility measure, besides the four-way flashers, was to move the light settings all the way up to "Lights + All Fog". Glad I practiced that maneuver before the storm hit, because there wasn't time to practice it after entering the downpour!

I'm kinda shocked that you would think that in 2-1/2 years that there was a possibility that no one pressed the SOS button. Don't press it just to try it out. That's like calling police dispatch or a rescue company just to see if someone's on the other end. Silly stunts like that could cause a delay in someone else connecting who really needed their services. It happens accidentally enough in the location it's in.

I think this is a fine idea! In addition, it would seem to be something that should be an Alexa "skill." I can think of loads of situations in which SOS would be needed but in which one is unable to press the button. Sure, we can play the "what if...?" game forever--nothing is perfect. But in terms of the effort needed to add the new skill vs. potential utility, adding "Alexa, SOS" seems like a winner. Maybe it's already there? Does anyone know?

For what it’s worth, they seem to have taken feedback and fixed this with Gen 2! The SOS button is now a series of two presses. You press the button first, which pops out to reveal it’s just a plastic cover. You then flick the cover down and press the big tempting button inside. It’s very “villain pressing the nuclear launch” button. Super cool!

I used it last summer when our truck was rear ended on I25 in Denver. The truck was totaled but kept us safe. The person on the other end helped us get a tow truck.

You don’t have to change the setting you can just close it by hand. Or let it drop down then give it a little push to latch. I used to have to do this all the time until the service center realigned the plastic properly.
