I wish they did a split white/black like a lot of manufacturers do now. Had that on my Velar (white body, black top) and it looked so sexy.
Isn't the white R1S like that though? This was an early prototype obviously (https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/white-rivian-r1s-real-life-pics-lunar-rock-interior.668/) but the pillars are black, and then the glass on top being dark. I am kinda banking on that look with my configured white R1S - but will need to see some more pictures from deliveries (hopefully s00n-ish). Otherwise I may opt for El Cap Granite.

It is still like that. I think they want the top of the back door and the pillar behind it to be black as well. They are currently body color.

Do you think that they’re going to only send R1S’s to employees first like they did with R1T?

I’m curious about that, because I figured the split would be 50-50 between the two, so it may be several months more until we get ours. Of course maybe they don’t need to because it’s less complicated and requires less development time

My guess is most employees ordered the R1T because of the employee program they had in place. It has been said the R1S was not part of that program so probably way less employees have an R1S ordered.

Oh, I didn’t know that. Makes sense especially with the way they started production with the truck first. It sounds like they used the employee R1T’s as beta testers to get all the bugs out anyways. Makes sense because the infotainment‘s are the same and probably most of the electronics.

Here is one of the first employee deliveries of the R1T back on October 1st last year. They also have a R1S ordered. I have been watching to see when they get delivery of their R1S.

Nothing since December when they showed him and the CFO taking delivery . . . .

I would not count RJ and Claire taking delivery days before the earning call and months before any other delivery as news on the R1S. I highly doubt the vehicles they received were of a quality to sell to a customer.

I don't consider it earth shattering, but it is, to me, as newsworthy as an Instagram story.

Spot on, if the pillar behind the rear seat were black then it would be equivalent to what my Velar had, and would look much better. The look I'm thinking of is all-black above the window line.

I don’t want a black exterior because of the solar gain, but that nearly-monochromatic look really does it for me.

Agree 100%. But damn it looks good. I also won't be spending extra money on dark rims.

I don't know about the R1S. I know they've made some running changes on the R1T. For instance, the underside of the hood. Early employees deliveries were have problems w/ wind getting between the hood (stamping) and the plastic underside, and it was causing rattling/whistling. They had only been apply glue/mastic to it in four areas, now, they apply adhesive around the entire border of the plastic.

My completely unsubstantiated theory is they did all those employee first deliveries because there was a bunch of software that was behind schedule and they had a few things they wanted to sort out before they shipped to folks outside the company. Since the R1T and R1S have the same software I'd think that wouldn't be the case this time around.

My thin evidence was based on how it seemed they were telling employees not to talk about charging capabilities and they have pretty egregious bugs like the rear climate screen not working at all.

I am not a software engineer and don't pretend to be one usually but I have struggled to understand why so many features were coming in a later software update. I get the Covid related delays on some issues but I would think the software development could have gotten a lot further while working remotely.

I suspect the hardware configuration wasn't ironed out 100% for some time, so the software guys couldn't really do too much until they had all the variables they were working with.
