I think they will eventually add it, I think they are listening to their fans. I don’t see it taking away from their UX experience

It's funny, with the top-down view this had also crept into my mind as something they may have snuck in there. It'd be cool if they do add it.

It's hubris to think that Rivian can, out of the gate, create a better experience than Android Auto or Apple's CarPlay.

It's the same sort of hubris that led the leadership team to believe they could raise prices on existing orders and that there would be no pushback.

I'd like to think they've learned a lesson.

I dunno, apparently I’m in the minority that believes that CarPlay and android auto shouldn’t compete or replace infotainment systems. It should just be an addition to the existing platform so that developers have easy access to get their apps into your car without having to develop a whole new app and learn a whole new development process for whatever platform of car it is. I just don’t think they should be competing with another, they should compliment one another.

If they do add CarPlay/Android, would it be part of a subscription service? Possibly including monthly rental of a 3rd and 4th coup holder?

I'm all for allowing both Rivian's and third party solutions. Adding support for CarPlay/Android Auto in addition to Rivian's own solution seems feasible. Most other manufacturers follow this model.

There are some areas, for example off road, where Rivian's solution may well be superior and be the preferred choice.

Just saying that I would like to have that choice.

Update: Am I saying that I would forego buying a Rivian because of the lack of support for third parties? It's pretty high on my list of wants but before this week I would have said no, it would not change my buying decision. Now? I don't know.

I actually would think this is a reasonable approach. It would piss people off, but it would also protect their revenue stream a bit.

Yeah, if they used that approach to help offset the lost cost of the lost money of the preorder price I’d be cool with it. Not ideal, but neither is them selling a vehicle at a loss so I feel like that’d be a decent middle ground.

Or put it behind the membership barrier somehow.

I didn't think it would be reasonable, well, before March 1st anyway. Again, depends on the subscription prices.

@frostbit3, I hope they’d present Android Auto and CarPlay via a window in their native infotainment. I’ve seen other manufacturers do this with large displays and it seems to be the best of both worlds when you want or need to use AA or CP.

Or put it behind the membership barrier somehow.
I’d be fine with AA+CP as an add-on to the Rivian membership. That would protect the membership revenue for them and give them a little extra, too.

Tesla still hasnt figured it out... V11 has been a total disaster. They made everything more complicated for the sake of change.

I am a huge advocate of apple/android car interfaces. Not saying the oem ui is bad but the choice of being able to run waze and other apps in the screen is invaluable. I would much rather a company pay for licensing for this than pay a team of ui/ux designers to change the layout of the ui every year so that I no longer know how to defrost my windows when it decides to update the ui in the middle of winter...

Complete guess here on my part, but I’d be willing to bet this moment on the Throttle House review got the ball rolling here:

Thomas: “These California upstarts think their poop don’t stink, and that they’re better than CarPlay, and guess what, they’re not.”

James: “because we tested (their UI) vs CarPlay, and it’s objectively worse actually”.

The funny thing is Apple and Google don’t charge any licensing fees for CP/AA. It’s completely free for the manufacturers to implement (aside from dev costs of course), which makes the decision to forgo that much more frustrating.
