Sorry to bump this one up again, but I received my R1S this past Saturday and I'm experiencing the same thing.

If I set the headlights to OFF (everything in front turns off, even DRL/oval lights/bar) it goes right back to AUTO a very short time later (DRL/bar turns on).

There seems to be no way to keep them off. If that's by design, I understand, but then why give us an option to turn it off?

EDIT: Anecdotally, it seems to turn back on when it is darker (under an overpass), and when it is brighter and I turn the lights OFF, it seems to stay off. But why?
The option to turn them off is more for situations where you parked sitting in the car and don't want to illuminate your surroundings. I usually do this while charging or when I'm just sitting in the car waiting for someone. They will stay off until you start driving again. When driving, the Halos will always come back on as a safety feature. The headlights in auto will go on and off as a function of how dark it is outside. Lights seem to always revert back to auto, every time you exit and shut down the vehicle and then get back in.

And that makes sense. Sometimes when I pull into my garage, my wife/son come out and I shut it off so it doesn't shine in their eyes.

It also makes sense because I believe it is a federal mandate that all cars after a certain year have DRLs, right? So not being able to turn them off permanently makes sense. But....in my Tesla (2022 model year) I can. In my company car (2022 Hyundai) there are no DRLs at all. Weird.

It does seem (anecdotally) that if I turn them off when it is bright out, they don't seem to turn back on again. But I'll check again later on my drive home.

I’m curious about your interest to turn off the DRL while driving. Are you looking to save on battery drain or do you not like the aesthetic look? Safety wise it seems best to keep them on.

I like the way it looks with the lights on. I love the unique aesthetics of the Rivian.

But sometimes I like the lights off. No real good reason. :p
