They might not be changing it's functionality, but I think it will continue to get updated map data (they separated that out from the normal OTA channel sometime last year...)
I'd just stick to the existing map data for free. Even non-Connect+ users get updated navigation maps. As @CharonPDX just said, the capabilities would have to be way better than what we already have to be worth anything. To my knowledge, Rivian never said that D+ was in "free trial."

To make sure we're on the same page:

Driver+ is the old thing for Gen1 vehicles and will not be getting any updated capabilities or cost. Autonomy Platform and Autonomy+ is on Gen2
The "Autonomy Platform" (like Driver+) is included at no cost.

Introducing Rivian Autonomy Platform+
A premium version of the system, Rivian Autonomy Platform+, is available on our second-generation vehicles and features an even broader set of enhanced capabilities. To start, Rivian Autonomy Platform+ features will be available on Gen 2 vehicles at no charge.

  • Lane Change on Command: Automatically performs lane changes in the direction of the turn signal while Highway Assist is engaged.
  • Enhanced Highway Assist: On compatible highways, take your hands off the wheel and the vehicle will control steering, acceleration, and braking.
While I want the above I for one am not willing to pay for it above what I already spent on the car. Not because I'm cheap (though I am frugal) or don't see the value (because I do). But because that should be a "buy a Rivian because" thing, and not a way to make more money from owners forever.

A free and robust unmapped Smart Cruise Control + Lane Centering is what we need to relieve tedium in driving. Let paid Full Atonomy development be kept under wraps where it belongs and not to be used as carrots for buyers until it’s ready to compete against best in class.

Thanks for the clarification. It looks like it only affects G2.

Also, I am 100% with you on "that should be a "buy a Rivian because" thing, and not a way to make more money from owners forever."

I will only pay a monthly subscription price for L3 or above.

FSD, Supercruise, Blue Cruise, etc are all L2 and there is no way I'm paying for that.

One of the reasons I'm content with my Rivian G1's L2 capabilities is because I didn't pay anything for it.

For Gen 2 it is also $0 because it is not much beyond Gen 1. If and when it gets decent autonomous capabilities, come back and we'll talk, but I am not a fan of subscriptions so its probably still zero.
A small quibble. The gen2 ADAS is significantly better than Gen1 right now, just in how it behaves and performs.

Is there anything there that I would regularly pay for at the moment? No. But I'm honestly not sure what I would regularly pay for on top of Connect+ that they plan on offering. They have a bit of a tight rope to walk here, when they flip the switch is Rivian going to put anything but ACC behind a pay wall? That would really piss people off. Will the current capabilities be free and then non-highways and "eyes off" be part of a subscription? Without knowing what the fee entails, this is really a question of how someone perceives Rivian as much as anything.

Would I pay for Tesla's FSD regularly? No. You still aren't supposed to be doing anything other than watching the car drive with it. That "eyes off" capability will be key.

I think we should get paid by using autonomy+ for all the data that is collected to train their LLM for further development of full autonomy in future.

I would pay $10/mo to get rid of the entire Driver+ system and be provided with a quality dumb cruise system that operates like every other vehicle I have owned in my lifetime.

Give me a resume button and keep the adaptive cruise and I'm in.

Lane centering is just OK, and honestly feels like just another system to manage while driving, not the reduction in workload that it's supposed to be.

Different people have different opinions. But my opinion with a gen2 is the polar opposite. When it’s available I drive hands off on the highway alllll the time - basically always.

This is how I feel using the Comma 3x with the Gen 1. I'm using it hands free almost all the time, with the added benefit of not just being limited to premapped highways. Hands free all the time anywhere.

Works great while towing as well.

This, is honestly, one of the biggest disappointments I have with the truck. The towing experience sucks. Adaptive cruise and LKA are disabled. Unsure why Rivian won't enable that, but it's a HUGE miss for me. Coupled with a pretty terrible suspension bounce when towing and lackluster power (non performance dual), I was significantly let down (or over hyped) with the towing experience.

Hate the premise of buying another $1,500 accessory to get the truck to do something it already has the hardware for.
