update: Happy (ish?) Ending

Went to an off road Motorsport shop that does a lot of custom work. They were ok with doing it. They did do a in depth analysis of some sort to verify size etc (I know oem js probably the only way to know for sure). Originally said it could take them hours and I would need to come back but they’d have it all set for me at my appointment during the week. They ended up verifying it is a standard lug. Swapped it out in about 15/20min after that point. Ceramic guy paid for it as well! Just under $200. Also do know someone at Riv I was able to get to verify it is ok to not swap the whole hub. I will still probably swap the hub still when I can get mobile service to come out. I wonder if I should have waited till after mobile service to ask him to pay that bill lol. Oh well. I am just glad I am whole(ish) and not worried about something sketchy happening to my wheel because of the 1 lug until then.
Thanks all ! Appreciate the help!

Took my R1T to get some over the top work done on her - ceramic coat rims, tires, calipers, wheel well. A week later I go to rotate my rims and tires to find this. Does anyone have experience with axle Stud / axle bolt work on an R1T? I do not have the most mechanical automotive knowledge. Thank you in advance for any guidance you can offer. Is this an expensive thing to fix? Is it unsafe? What happens if I get a flat? I appreciate any help you can offer

I am pretty mad that I let this happen to her. I am so obsessed when this truck

I had something similar happen on an older Jeep and it was a surprisingly inexpensive fix (Less than $100). That was a quite a few years ago but don’t worry…

Studs are relatively easy to replace on most cars, though have yet to replace one on my Rivian.

Seems like this happened at the shop that did the ceramic, since (I assume) the wheels had to come off. Which means they cross-threaded a stud when replacing that wheel.

I would absolutely go back to your ceramic shop and politely but firmly request they do this work for you, at their cost. If it becomes too big a deal and you just want it handled without confrontation, any wheel shop should be able to handle it at a pretty modest cost.

I had a couple of them get stripped out, my fault.

Rivian doesn't recommend trying to replace them DIY. They ended up replacing the whole hub on mine because they didn't have a service procedure for replacing a single stud.

Oh gosh. Thank you so much. I have been so angry and worried. But if it doesn’t sound too expensive then that makes me feel a lot better

I appreciate you sharing the info. I will work with them on it but I sort of feel it may be time to walk away from them. They have mihandled at least 1 piece of each job I have done with them. The work is good but the attention to detail is not. Moreover; the owner of the shop who coordinated my work also knows the truck is used in essentially emergency response situations and that I put a lot into ensuring it is as reliable as possible. He knew I would find it and didn’t say anything. That says something to me

thanks again. Truly appreciated

That’s absurd that they replaced the whole hub. I bet they just didn’t have a part number for the stud. I believe you can just hammer it out and pop a new matching pitch stud in.

Regarding your safety question, coupled with the statement that you use it in emergency response, I would absolutely get it in asap to be repaired. 230ft-lbs being delivered per wheel on this truck and it weighs 7k lbs - not something I would trust to 4 lugs and a hub ring.

Biting my tongue on the shop owner, though. That‘s irresponsible to the point of being dangerous.

IMO that is all the more reason to at least approach them about paying for it to be repaired. That would be done by a wheel or machine shop, not them.

Sounds like you have plenty of reasons to not go back to them so if they say no then it’s no big loss - you just move on.

Totally agree but FWIW mine finally broke beyond repair in BC near Radium Hot Springs. Ended up driving it through Golden all the way back to Portland, OR then to Bellevue for repair on 4, Rivian was fine with it.

It is dangerous for sure I agree. I am super upset about it. Not saying something about it seems almost criminal for a company doing business by providing vehicles for service. Mind you all they had to do was remove them rims/tires. No real work beyond removing them and wiping the area down. I’m if I was an unsuspecting customer then it could have been a lot worse because it would probably have stayed like that until something bad happened. To be honest that is just one of the problems. On the other side check this out

dang. Does this mean you had to pay Riv? How much? I am so scared of giving them my truck again. I would go to some lengths to avoid it

Also, how long did it take to get the service ? And how long for them to do the repair when it was done? Considering D/L the truck until I can get it fixed. I am so fucking pissed. If this guy would have mentioned it I could have done something at a much more opportune time.

Fortunately they covered the cost. I think they were trying to make up for the fact that I reported the problem with my studs and they quietly deleted the request when I had it in for service then I had it completely fail while on a road trip.

Oh dang. Yeah I don't think they'll cover this since it wasn't their problem in the first place

As I recall the repair only took them a few hours.

I would definitely be pissed if a shop did this, they should know better.
