Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could explain what happened to me yesterday. When I tried backing straight into a parking spot yesterday, the car would almost immediately shift me out of reverse and into park while moving. It took about 7-8 shifts back into reverse to get into the spot. Any ideas??

Lifting yourself off the seat will make it go straight into park, unless you are also resting your left foot on the brake pedal.

Buckle your seat belt and it won't happen. If the belt is buckled you can still lift your ass off the seat without issue.

Were you looking behind you when you were backing up or were you just using the mirrors and camera? If you were looking back I'm sure you're inadvertently lifting off the seat.

It’s a combination of butt off seat, unbuckled, and/or door open. 2 of 3 and it shifts to park

Was your seatbelt buckled and were you turning yourself around and lifting up out of if the seat as opposed to facing forward and using the backup camera / mirrors?

Funny — this happened to me in our new ID 4. I figured out the seat belt thing but still wasn’t sure why it would go, then stop. The VW even shuts down and shows the goodbye screen.

They expect us to use the back-up cameras but I, and I bet the OP, were twisting and lifting to look out the back window.

Edited - I see that the poster known as Fear of High Speeds beat me to the full explanation. Dunno why I never recognized what your name meant till now, supratachophobia.

I got up today with belt buckled as camera was too dirty to be useful. No problem.

This feature is very annoying when backing a trailer down a boat launch. I personally cant rely on the cams. I need to physically look back to see which way the hitch is pointing. That involves undoing by seatbelt and lifting my arse off the seat. It is annoying and embarrassing to have the vehicle slam into park half way down the ramp.

That's happened to me a couple of times too, especially when you're backing down a steep ramp and the boat/trailer is on the ramp portion and the vehicle is on the parking lot portion.. the boat literally drops below your view unless you lift up out of the seat to see behind you. I'm hoping the new bed cam will solve this issue next spring.

Happened once to me backing out of a tight space. I thought the truck thought I was too close to something. I don’t remember lifting my rear but that might have been it.
