I got my R1S last week and have a question about what to do when using a full-service car wash where I leave the car and the staff cleans it and then moves it onto the automatic track. I assume even after I put the car in Car Wash mode that the attendant will need a key in order to move the car and so I’m wondering the best way to do this. If I initially unlocked and drove the car with the mobile key, how do I switch it to the key card so I can just leave the key card in the car instead of leaving my phone in the car? Is it as simple as leaving the key card on the charging tray?

The car card or the key fob, would be the best way to do it.

Right but my question is a bit more technical. If I originally opened the car with the mobile key and leave the car with the key card inside the car, how do they make the key card the “active” key instead of the mobile key, i.e., if I walk away with my phone, the car will lock even if the key card is still in the car because it was opened with the mobile key.

Keycard and fob remain as recognized keys, regardless of which key initiated wake and trip. You do not need to leave your phone with any stranger unless you need an excuse for a new phone. And you can test this easily at home. Unlock car with phone. Shut phone off or move phone out of Bluetooth range. Then interact with car using card or fob.

I'm not sure I'd let a carwash attendant move a car with that much power. The R1s are deceivingly fast with a ton of torque. Just ask Alan Ruck.

Thanks. I did that with the card left in the car and the car still locked so I now see that instead I need to give the attendant the card

Yep. Just like a valet and physical keys back in the day.

Don't think of keycard like your phone key, but like an old-school key.

Your phone contains all sorts of private info too. Should never leave it with strangers. And whether you use phone or fob as your primary key, prudent to also carry a keycard on you as backup or for valet.

Yes, I always carry the card too. Leaving a locked phone in the car is really not that big of a deal but I agree that it’s better to just give them the card

It should not lock in car wash mode, just closes the handles. They can still be used.

LOL, no, take it wherever, it's fine. Source: Many years of many cars to many generic car washes. Sure, they are going to run 1/8 mile full throttle runs in the parking lot.. Life's too short to worry about this.

Confirmed that car wash mode works as I expected. I've used it, never had an issue, but also just took it for granted that it would do what I expect. Same as the Tesla.

Depending on how many Rivians they see, you may also need to show them how to use the card to make it move. There are pictures on the keycard, but not everyone interprets them the same way.
