My 68 year old sister in law wanted me to teach her how to "shoot a gun". Her cluelessness to the repercussions of shooting a person shocked me. And frankly, at her age a young person with minimal skills is going to disarm her and potentially use the weapon against her. My advice to her is give them the keys. The vehicle is insured. (even in West Virginia...) The $1,000 USAA deductible won't cover two hours of lawyer fees, and if you shoot someone today you will need a lot more than that to cover your legal expenses. And God forbid the person was unarmed.... If you are feeling brave and actually in your vehicle... That vehicle is your best weapon and your best defense. Get off the X and get out of the kill zone.
Wisdom saves lives more than any gun has. Go ahead search the web, how many people killed every year accidently vs as a self protection.

You'd find some bullshit numbers. Most DGUs go unreported. I know the two incidents of mine never generated a police report they aren't counted in any statistics.

Sigh.

This is what makes these forums so interesting. The guy from Virginia telling the guy from Oregon what it's like to live in Oregon.

Pop quiz Virginia boy. Do you know which part of Oregon Portland is in?

How about a guy that says "Most DGU's go unreported " Likely because not enough of them exist.

If I can’t run the guy over.. I’m giving my keys over. Be mindful of your surroundings and keep your doors locked while you are in the vehicle and you should be fine.. Otherwise South Africa has anti-carjacking underdoor flame throwers that you can test your luck with.

Also a manual driver, and suspect something similar may happen here. Give them the car, get to a safe distance, count how long it takes for them to look for the ignition button and figure out the gear stalk. I bet you'll have a good couple of minutes of entertainment, hopefully while waiting for the cops to surround them.

I don't think an editorial written by a private-practice radiologist is the best way to support your argument :CWL:
Someone didn't actually read the source I see. I'm sure the linked CDC study which is the focus of the article is bullshit too right? The problem with people who play that little your source isn't good enough game when it is a respected publication is they only do so when they have no source of their own disproving it.

So what say you guy, got yourself a more reputable source that contradicts what mine says? Let's see it, but until you post an article that references a study more reputable than the one the CDC conducted then mine rules the day. That is because I actually bothered to back up what I said with a source.

My 68 year old sister in law wanted me to teach her how to "shoot a gun".
I'd take her shooting. The idea of shooting a gun is a whole lot different than the reality of holding the gun and dealing with the noise, flash, and recoil. Make she isn't wearing hearing protection because she wouldn't wearing ear plugs in the situation she thinks she's preparing for.

My advice to her is give them the keys. The vehicle is insured. (even in West Virginia...) The $1,000 USAA deductible won't cover two hours of lawyer fees, and if you shoot someone today you will need a lot more than that to cover your legal expenses. Agree with this.

A situational awareness course would be best, if after that a gun is wanted, then be it. However, awareness is first, and without that, a gun can be very dangerous. Too many people have been killed by their own gun.

Maybe they could add a silent alarm type option. This would allow the vehicle to behave normally for a set distance then start throwing errors on the instrument cluster / reduce performance so the vehicle is effectively playing dead. Once stopped it could flash all lights and honk the (not especially attention-getting on newer builds) horn. You’d be able to get to safety as they drive off and I suspect the thieves would quickly bail. Bonus points if the vehicle can start playing a message, “This vehicle is stolen.” in multiple languages via the external PWS speakers and the stereo, loudly.

Ultimately, it’s a possession which can be replaced. Unless there‘s another person or a pet strapped in I’d just let them take it and start figuring out what color to get for the next one.
yours is the best answer hopefully Rivian will do that. It is a computer on wheels so they can’t say it can’t be done with enough programming

As an aside, I'd think professional carjackers are usually too smart to bother with an EV because of all of the sophisticated electronics and tracking. It's the dumb ones to keep an eye on... and they probably won't know about all of the key options for a Rivian, or how fast you can drive away!
I was reading this thread thinking the same thing: carjackers wouldn't bother with an EV because it's too complicated, can be tracked, and stands out more than a Camry or other nondescript vehicle... but then, here(-ish) in DC, they tried to break into a Secret Service Vehicle last night. Never underestimate stupidity.

Of note, the pew-pew went pew-pew.

Bear spray in the door pouch?

Dude, I can understand wanting to be prepared but don't you think that's a bit much?

How about you just floor it?
Apparently lemmings are born every minute.

I keep bear spray in my door pouch as a minimum. I have several other effective methods of self defense from inside my vehicle as well.

Lastly, "flooring it" may not be an option.

If someone points a gun at you, you let them take the truck.
That is no guarantee you’ll be spared…but your point is taken. Just remember to set the time for the “Battery Explode” feature! Haha
