I’ve got a 2023 Rivian with ~30k miles. I use the official Portable Charger about twice a week and only charge to 80%.

Over the last few months, I’ve been getting intermittent issues — the app notifies me that charging has stopped, shows a “Charging Error,” and the truck screen shows the message in the photo. After a few minutes it restarts and continues charging.

Also not sure why it's showing 48amp on the error screen but shows 22amps when charging. I double-checked and when it's unplugged as well it also is showing 48 but I previously had set to 28. Weird.

We never take the travel/portable charger anywhere, so it basically stays plugged into the same wall outlet and doesn’t get much wear.

Happened to me too. Had everything replaced of wiring harness, on board charger and Rivian evse. That finally fixed it.

Is the charger hanging from the plug or do you have suitable strain relief? You are supposed to hang it on a screw. If you don't, the weight will cause the short removable plug cord to slightly pull away from the charger body and cause charging errors.
Happened to me too.
OP is talking about the portable charger, not the wall charger.

Can also be grounding problems. My Tesla threw errors on one of my EVSEs but not the other, while the Rivian charged fine on both. Turned out the ground was flaky on the faulty one, and the Tesla’s onboard charger was more sensitive than Rivian’s.

Fixed the grounding, works fine.

I used to run into this error a lot when I was using an aftermarket L2 charger. I would get that error almost every time I would go from using a DCFC to the L2, along with the amperage mismatch. At home, I had to unplug and plug the L2 charger back into the wall to clear it (or bounce it through the wall service panel) for it to realign.

I have switched back to the Rivian supplied L2 charger (mounted to a screw next to a NEMA 14-15 socket splitter) and keep my charging amperage set to no higher than 24 amps. I have not had that problem since. The aftermarket unit is now in the under-bed storage.

I have scaled back my DCFC use; only using it when needing to quickly bring the battery up to extended range following a drive (from as low as 8% remaining!).

I'm getting these errors a lot more as well. I use a Tesla UWC. If I unplug and replug right away, the error goes away and charging will start. I've had some issues with charging speed, but not recently. We have a MachE that charges fine on the same connector.

Put your Tesla UWC into compatability mode instead of "any vehicle" for charging. The unplug error still stop.

I can try that, though I've been charging like this for over a year and only noticed these errors in the past month.

Just got my UWC this month. Maybe it was specific to a recent firmware? Either way switching from any vehicle to compatability mode fixed it for me.

I have two UWCs connected together. I've read that compatibility mode disables some Tesla-specific features. While I don't really care about access control or powersharing with a Cybertruck, I wonder if group control would also be lost. It's pretty rare that we'd both charge at the same time, but it's still possible.

Not sure but I saw that warning too when I changed it in the Tesla app. I only have the Rivian so I can't speak to that. You can always be the guinea pig and let us know ;-)

If the truck isn't charging, it will default to its highest capability. When charging, it will observe what the L2 EVSE can supply.

Had the same thing happen last week after using a Tesla NACS DCFC, then would not charge at home. Resetting the HPWC did not fix the issue (nor using a second HPWC or difference J1772 adapters).

Hard reset of the Rivian enabled home charging again.

I Have a different issue. I can’t charge off the Tesla uncle or the Rivian portable charger. Only can charge off of superchargers. Taking it in next week.
