But I think after all the strikes here in LA, that Drama, or at least the ability to engage with it in official, broadcaster backed content & apps is the very point.
At home my Sony TV’s accept my telephone streaming & the HDMI Apple TV’s connected to them, as do the Sonos speakers throughout my home & garden.
Yet my $100K car does not.
That that is strictly controlled & mandated by its manufacturers software, is the point.
It is solely by their choice, that 57,000 of us early adopters & owners are not allowed to watch our own original content, or share to the screen, content that we are subscribers to.
But maybe when they can (after 4 months) provide me with either a NACS adapter, or even a spare tyre, I’ll be able to get ‘Adventurous’ & begin to search out the deepest countryside, or desert.
But even then, I’d now expect that I’d need to pack an iPad (& likely a Starlink) to watch a movie that I already own, or even catch up on a show that I already subscribe to.
The point here is that we are all adults, we all have our choices.
I would simply expect that my car, most particularly at $100k, allows me to view content that I already own & subscribe to.
And all of us who are early adopters were made aware of Rivian’s plan to handle their software this way. They were even nice enough to tell you they never plan to add specific options like CarPlay so that you could factor that into your decision of whether you want to spend your money on their vehicle.

If you didn’t like it there are plenty of other $100k vehicles you could spend your money on, which is also worth noting - At the price I paid for my R1T there are many other trucks I could have chosen. NONE of them include every option I ever wished for. That isn’t how buying things works :like:

In the beta version my neighbor had (Rivian Employee) a few months back, he could cast video from his personal library. I'm sure that feature is coming soon. We've had our 2023 R1S for a year and a half and it has come a long way software wise. At the same time, I knew what I was getting when I plunked down that huge check on delivery day. Besides Tesla, pretty much nobody updates software like Rivian or Tesla and you have to buy the next years model to get anything worth while. We are up to 5 Rivians at the local crossfit gym I go to and only two of us who frequent forums complain about new features or lack there of. Everyone else just loves their Rivian.

Hadn't tried that one so I went out and gave it a go. Worked fine. So, I flipped through and got these results with an iPhone 16 Pro Max:

Peacock = yes
Disney+ = yes
Hulu = yes
Prime Video = yes
Max = yes
Paramount+ = yes
YouTubeTV = yes
ESPN = yes
Netflix = no (there's a cast button but it doesn't see the Rivian)
Apple+ = no (no cast function except Airplay so no button)
Thanks for the confirmation! Seeing that you were able to get them working on iOS I decided to revisit the ones you confirmed worked. I was indeed connected to the trucks WiFi. My issue ended up being an App Settings issue. I had Local Network access turned off for my streaming apps. Turned it on, connected to the trucks WiFi, and now the cast icon is available on the Home Screen of the app.

Thanks so much for the help! I would have just written it all off as not working on iPhones.

When you connect your iPhone to wifi, it tends to block local network access for apps right off the bat. This extra iOS security measure is why Google Cast might not work immediately.

It seems like many commenters don't know/understand what Google casting is. It's platform agnostic. It works the same on an iPhone as it does on an Android phone. You open the video app, hit the cast button and watch the video on your Rivian. Airplay, on the other hand only casts from an apple device (iPad, iPhone etc) to the Rivian. It would have been a real d*ck move if they had just supported airplay as no android user would have been able to cast video to their car.

The current implementation is even better than having video apps built in to the car because the car is just a receiving device this way. Whatever app you have that supports Google casting (and there are countless) is just going to work (except for Netflix). With apps built into the car, like on Tesla, you're limited to whichever apps Tesla has created for the car (Netflix, Hulu, Disney, YouTube).

But please, learn what Google casting is before you think this was a slight against apple users. It isn't. It works just as well with your iPhone as it does with my pixel.

The car runs on Google's Android OS, its essentially a skin like when you buy those Cheap Fire tablets, that keep you within the Amazon ecosystem.

Carplay /Android are great for ONLY 2 reasons.. 1) allows you to use your music app of choice, maps, and navigation WITHOUT having to buy an additional data package, But Rivian (and tesla) want to sell you a data plan for recurring revenue and collect your data, driving habits locations etc.. which the phone and watch you're wearing is already doing.

and 2) perfect integration of calls and text with quick and easy reply or ignore options. No reason we can't get that feature.

Carplay/ Android auto aren't great, but they fill void.

I have huge respect for Rivian for trying to do their own thing, not so much for blocking us from the alternative. Not even USB/AUX playback is a bummer. BT quality sucks.

My 2017 Mazda did not come with AA/CP. They built a software update and a USB power upgrade at $450 including installation. I got it installed at dealer and it can do generally do a lot more than Rivian can. Paying for a car specific data plan would have cost much more than $450 for 7 years. And it is getting updated as the phone gets updated.

If you'd rather drive a Mazda and have CP that is an option available to you. I'd rather drive a Rivian and use their native system because despite its limitations the car is far superior to any Mazda.

Easy tiger. No need for pitch forks. We can say what we like and don't. Perfect car doesn't exist

And I do prefer Mazda asking as long as I don't get on the freeway.

And Rivian has directly said they will NEVER offer CP. So there's no point in mentioning it, it isn't ever going to happen.

I am not asking for it and I know they won't do it. However, if you are gonna say that other cars don't get updates, it's wrong. I got both a hardware upgrade and software upgrades.

Yeah, my phone gets monthly updates. If I include updates to the individual apps available, a lot more. Car mirrors the phone.
You did a great job avoiding the question I asked. We were talking about your MAZDA, not your phone. We both know it didn't get updates and feature additions anywhere close to what Rivian does.
