I previously owned a 2022 R1T. It was a relatively early vin and I really enjoyed it. I sold it a year ago after buying another off-road vehicle. A year later, I'm missing the Rivian and I'm missing having a pickup more than I expected. I'm considering the new quad.

I'm curious what the consensus is on the new vs old quads. Does the powered tonneau actually work now? It seems people aren't impressed with the audio, but that's not something particularly important to me. I mostly listen to audiobooks in the car. It also seems like the cameras aren't potato-quality any more either. Does the wireless phone charger actually work? It also seems like with the ability to set wheel sizes, it's a much more realistic option to have a set of "high efficiency" wheels and then swap to the ATs when they're actually needed.

I'm also wondering what incentives are available right now. I saw they're offering 2% financing, which is cheap enough that I'd buy it with a loan and arbitrage the cash.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
I went through something similar-ish to you, and while I didn't come back to a Quad, I ended up in a dual performance.

So tonneau - yes, it works now. Just make sure it says "V2" in the config so you get the skinny-slatted rollup version. Stereo - I think it's very good, though not as tight as the Meridien.

Efficiency is 2.8mi/kWh for me on average so far after 3.5k miles. Wireless charger works better than the original, but so does holding it next to an electrical outlet and fanning electrons towards it - it's not great.

Cameras are a definite improvement as well.

Avatar image is my G1 QM, new one is a red G2 ('26) DPM. Having the extra battery and efficiency (140+kWh, and upwards of 3 mi/kWh) is a game changer to get places. And I still have a set of ATs on the side for playing in the dirt.

Doug DeMuro’s recent review sums it up well. It’s over the top with few bells and whistles that isn’t very useful (including yet to be delivered kick turn and RAD Tuner). Tri is more on par with gen 1 quad, plus all gen 2 advancements; including better efficiency. I would do tri max instead if I want to keep similar performance. Performance Dual is probably most prudent.

The charging pad is really the same with a divider in the middle. Your phone won’t slide as far laterally, but can slide fore/aft just the same. Swap it out for one by soonishev.com.

The wireless charger isn't great. It keeps the phone from sliding around -- a bit. You're better off swapping it out for something else or just plugging in. I got one of the ones from Soonish. Most of the time, the stock wireless charger would stop charging my phones due to heat build up -- it worked in a pinch but wasn't reliable. I can't speak to much else as I too don't listen to much music (mostly podcasts) and I have the R1S which, obviously, doesn't have a tonneau cover.

I built a tri in the configurator and it was less than $10k cheaper than the quad. At that point, I think I would rather have the quad. The performance dual is interesting though. 370 miles of range on the ATs is a compelling option at about $20k cheaper when configured more or less equivalently.

Yup. The acceleration is fun, but not something that is needed often. 665 hp and 829 ft-lb is plenty. But no launch mode for PDM. Dune was an excellent value for Tri, but that’s gone and done with.

I just got my new quad this week. IMO if one can spring for it, do it. It's so much more refined and dialed in than my OG 22 Quad was (which was my favorite vehicle ever, before trading it in for the '26). The power tonneau cover is so much faster, smoother and quieter. I don't notice a difference in audio (my previous R1T had the meridian) but I'm far from an expert. Cameras are laughably better. Hands free driving on premapped roads (currently) works really well. The Ascend interior feels like a huge upgrade as well.
I got the 1.99% financing plus 3K off the price (2k for trade in and 1K for same day ordering).

I traded my 2023 R1S quad for a 2026 R1S dual motor, max battery. The extra range is great. It's plenty fast - I really don't miss that extra second. The heat pump is an improvement over the four slice toaster. No more adapter for the Tesla SC. Much improved cameras. The 12 volt upgrade for the dash is much easier.

I didn't know they had gone to a heat pump. That's great to hear.

I think the range of the quad in conserve will be about the same as the dual max. Rivian says 400 for quad conserve versus 410 for dual max.

Not pushing for the quad, I think the dual is great. The problem with the dual is that you have to install purple wrap yourself instead of paint from the factory.

All of my loaners have been launch edition quads and I have to say they have all been clunky and noisy. Last one seemed like it needed major suspension work. The advisor said the loaners don't get a lot of warranty work performed. I also find the throttle control and regenerative braking to be superior on the G2

If I were you I'd get a new one. The G1s are going to be wallet busters once they are out of warranty. G2s have a lot of different suspension changes. The V3 tonneau on the G2 quads is said to be much better than the V1 or V2 tonneaus.

I think the stereo is fine and has certainly improved with the updates. The electric room dimming works great. The wireless charger sucks for iPhones with a case. I have the EVsportline magnetic one for the driver and a USB C cord routed to the wireless charging pad for the passenger.

Feel free to use my referral code if you get one and definitely get those gorgeous California Dune wheels.

The new PTC is great.

The wireless chargers are slightly less stupid, but they are in a dumb place to keep the phone anyway. There are two great charger/dash dock options from Twraps.

I did find the audio disappointing in the new one, but fine for books and podcasts.

Overall I don't recall any significant and obvious feel difference from G1 to G2 in the R1S. I haven't been able to get a drive in a G2 R1T.

I have a gen1 quad but I have the v2 tonneau retrofit and operates like butter, I am thrilled every time I use it and don't have to hear that clunk per slat. No one has owned it long enough to know if it will last but I can confirm that the operation alone is drastically improved.
If you are getting audio references online make sure you are looking at recent posts or talking to users who are running latest updates. Reporting from several sources I've seen state it's very good now but maybe not the bass the meridian provided. Out of Spec video earlier this week stated as such, but others have too. All sources a year ago seemed to agree that it sucked.

Do you have kids? If so, take a LONG hard look at the interior emergency rear door handles and what a kid would have to do to exit the vehicle in an emergency. If it’s not an issue, then carry on.
