Okay, I’ll be “that guy.”

Please remember that these are 7,100 lb vehicles (not 8,500 lb as I mistakenly posted originally). If you are using radar detectors and laser jammers, you are likely driving far in excess of the speed limit. Please give some thought as to how much you may be endangering yourself, your family, and others. Plus, you are killing your range.

To be fair, when I think back on all the stupid things I’ve done, I’m thankful that I’m still alive. (The people who weren’t so lucky aren’t available to participate in this forum.) Please take care of yourselves and others.

I’ll see myself to the door now.

For what its worth, the R1S is a 7,000lb vehicle not an 8,500lb vehicle, and I don’t think folks buy jammers/detectors to intentionally drive far in excess of the speed limit. But exaggerations help with the narrative I guess. Thanks for your safety bulletin.

I think such folks might be using it wrong then. (When I used one, I was driving too fast though I would probably not have said so at the time.)

Duly noted regarding weight, however. I mistakenly used gross instead of curb weight. I did not intend to exaggerate. (No need to do so-the R1 is heavy.) I apologize for the error. Not so much for the safety bulletin. But, well, maybe for being a scold. 🙃

Well, how you use it depends on your level of maturity.

What's the purpose of these things assuming one doesn't speed in excess of 10-14 miles an hour over the limit? Any benefit to them at all?

It depends on the highways you travel on and how keen the local police are on certain stretches. My wife was stopped on a stretch on Merritt Parkway, CT at +7mph over the limit. These devices just warn you of police presence on certain stretches. Some folks find them useful, others don’t.

Thanks again. Before I start I am looking for a good option for the 12 V switched power connection, and how you routed the cable for the control head through the firewall
I had my local shop install the ALP+Beltronics combo so unfortunately I don’t have details of how the cables were routed to the control head. As with other 12v devices the unit switches on as my phone is near the vehicle and switches off a few minutes after I leave the vehicle. Sorry I can’t be of more help. I’ll post interior and exterior photos this weekend.

I see, you throw a grenade and then run!

Reading this thread it slightly crossed my mind too, but then thinking about it:

1-Don’t know everyone’s specific use/situation, so shouldn’t assume anything.

2-Been to Utah? Was there last year and I’ve never seen so many semis doing almost 90 mph! It was eye opening to say the least…not everyone in US is asleep in the left lane going 50 mph in 65.

3-The R1 is so fast! Hit 90 while still on the on-ramp other day…some of us may need insurance policy…this looks like a nice setup

I saw a similar one with Cam integrated, anyone have a good reason for/against that one?

I just removed a Beltronics STi-R Plus laser shifters from my outgoing Tesla. I plan on installing it in the truck, one of these days. Zero tickets in over 10 years of owning it, and I drive fast.

The Escort 360 package with cam I assume? They’re all good to be honest with you, and Escort is the most popular brand. I’ve just had the ALP+Beltronics combo across our cars so it made sense to stick with the same config.

Not sure why you suggest I’m throwing a grenade. Just suggesting these are big vehicles and encouraging people to act responsibly. Live and let live—with an emphasis on the “let live” part.

Utah is beautiful. (Driving slowly on the left is a problem too and can really make things dangerous.)

Not entirely sure why this thread about custom installed radar detector & laser protection has been hijacked for poignant reminders about the weight of Rivians, speed, life and death 🤔

I installed an ALP 2 head + NetRadar system in our 23 R1S. Used the power from the wire on the driver side frunk area (where they used to have the 12v outlet on early units - wire is still there). Routed the wires into the cabin through the grommet left (passenger side) of the air filter box. I installed the radar head behind the plastic area near the driver side headlight. I did not install any rear heads.
