I was all set to take delivery on my new Limestone Quad tomorrow afternoon at 1:00. All of my task were completed and was very excited. Then late this afternoon I receive an email that my delivery had been canceled. I quickly texted my guide, but then before she could respond I noticed a VM on my cell phone from the local service center. My R1S along with a few others were hail damaged from the thunderstorms that passed through this past Sunday.

They have a paintless dent repair vendor coming by tomorrow to take a look but not sure when the vehicles will be ready to deliver. My concern and hoping to get some feedback here, is will there be any issues that may come up with the paint later down the line due to the repair? I'm going to swing by there tomorrow and take a look myself. Very excited to take delivery but don't want to deal with lingering issues later.

Unless it somehow perforated the paint layers I don’t think that should be a concern IMO. It sounds weird to say it, but consider yourself lucky it happened before you took delivery. You still get a chance to inspect and reject it if you don’t like what you see.

Please don't tell the dent repair guy/gal that they're pointless. They're people too.

The only time I can see a dent repair person being pointless is if the glass roof was broken from the storm. ;)

I agree that this was in your favor. They could have easily ask you to take delivery and make you place a service call for the damages. This would help Rivian with their numbers. Sounds like they are trying to do the right thing for the customer. That's great to see.

Anyways, sorry to about the damages. Hopefully things turned out okay in the end.

I'm not a paint expert so I can't answer your question with confidence. I guess you can ask them where the dent was and see if you see any spiderwebbing in the paint. Use the door flashlight to help you inspect.

I wouldn’t have concerns over the paint, but I’d be a little worried about the glass. The panoramic roofs on some EV’s seem unusually prone to severe damage despite minor impacts, so I’d inspect it with a fine tooth comb. If you live in an area with regular hail, I still wouldn’t be too concerned with the glass because you’re gonna get hit with hail again, probably several times, and may need to file a claim anyway.

I lived in the OKC metro for about 15 years so hail was just a thing that you dealt with when it happens. Out here in the PNW, however, I’d certainly consider refusing delivery since I doubt there would ever be another hail storm and I wouldn’t wanna take the risk…or so I say that when I already have a Rivian and don’t have the level of excitement you probably do for delivery day. You could easily justify a decision either way.

A buddy of mine was driving in Missouri a couple weeks ago, got caught in a hail storm in his Honda Ridgeline, no glass broken, had 20 dings only 1 had fractured paint, the rest were clean dimples.

"Clean dimples"? That makes it sound so cute!

I would probably try to get a truck that is highly resistant to normal hail damage. Paintless dent repair is a good way to deal with hail damage, but I wouldn't pay new prices for a car that had hail damage and had been repaired with paintless dent removal. The paint and the metal will never quite be the same again. It also makes it harder to repair next time the hail damages it.

I agree, most of the damage was the hood, I told him I would replace the hood if I were him.

PDR guys/gals can work miracles if you ask me. I wouldn't be overly concerned but still do a thorough inspection at delivery to make sure everything is right. I created a checklist for this purpose too.

I had mine repaired at a local PDR guy, actually came back better because he aligned the hood ? I had damage on the hood, front PS fender, roof line and around the bed. Came back perfect.

Just something that happens in central Texas.

Maybe he is happy to trade hail resistance for driving around in a ridiculous looking triangle that might eat his fingers or slice open an artery???‍♂

I stick with trucks where the windshield wiper still works when it's snowing. Or when it's windy.

PDR can be great when done correctly, but you also have to understand how the dents are taken out to understand the risks. Sometimes they use a glue tab to pull the dent from the outside and then tap it smooth. Other times they need to get a rod behind the dent to push it out from behind. Those type of situations can be more problematic because of the way they access the dents from behind. Sometimes they even have to drill holes into panels (almost always hidden) to get access. The point I'm trying to make is that it's pretty typical for a bunch of disassembly to access dents that need to be pushed out from behind. So in the case of a hail storm, denting most of the horizontal surfaces of a vehicle, they might have to pull down the headliners to get to the dents on the roof, for example. Personally, I'd take a pass on a hail damaged new car, but that's just me.

Where was the hail storm ? My Rivian was in Wimberley TX. Central Texas, I am presently out of country and have only seen photos of our hail damage
