Did the new update break the hvac?

It's def not just a Gen2 Heat Pump issue, this has been a problem reported every fall/winter since the R1 started shipping. It's wildly unpredictable when you try to control the temperature in the 71 - 73 degree range.

I noticed the other day at least part of the problem. Heat was set for auto, 73 on driver side and 71 on passenger side (driver and passenger was not sync'd). The driver center vent was blowing warm air, the passenger center vent was blowing MUCH colder air, it felt like maybe 60 degrees. It was apparently trying to over compensate for the 2 degree setpoint difference, and doing a really poor job. The cold air was making the entire cabin cold. Just for kicks, I manually bumped the passenger up to 73 and eventually everything settled down.

I doubt there is a hardware issue, this seems like a control issue.

100% this. We reported this last year and will again this year. It’s not consistent and there have been times where we can’t get it to blow out actual hot air.

We experienced this fun driving from Nc to NY today. We also learned that, on our gen2 at least, after dcfc that sucker ain’t blowing out warm air ever again without a full blow restart. Happened every single time. So needless to say I broke the don’t reboot more than once a day rule because it was 18 out and I was cold

Mine is gen1 and resetting doesn't help.

Had this car for 2+ years. The heating was always annoying to use, but bit like this!

That’s a tricky one. One possible solution is to throw away the passenger ?

Plug a heating blanket into the 120 volt outlet and call it good.

Since the last Nov update my HVAC seems to turn the vents off whenever the vehicle sleeps or sits for an extended period of time. In the beginning, it seemed like HVAC wasn’t working, but now I’m kind of used to having to turn my vents back on at the beginning of most drives.

My vents used to just reposition to default/straught, but since this update they turn off. I’ve resubmitted my service ticket and hope to have this addressed in Jan.

Could this be similar to what others are experiencing?

(I just got the Dec update and haven’t checked if it’s fixed or different now)

I noticed that as well. In winter I always set the vents to blow air from the windshield and the leg for all cars I’ve owned. It’s always set and forget. Last year the Rivian was fine. This winter, i need to manually turn on the lower vents every time I get into the car even though I’ve already saved the vent settings.

The HVAC has left much to be desired since day one. I feel like they still haven’t got it right. A one degree difference on the thermostat could mean blowing hot air and cold air. There’s nothing in between.

I typically have mine synced at 68 in the winter and 71 in the summer and it's comfortable throughout the cabin.

Based on these reports, it sounds like a dumb system that can't handle multiple inputs (more than one constant heat temp). I love my Rivian but can't understand why some design choices were made and why needed to overcomplicate it (electric air vent controls).

I had a weird issue this weekend with HVAC in Pet Mode. We are PA where it is ~20-30 degrees. We left the dogs in the car for 45 minutes or so while getting breakfast with Pet Mode set to 68 degrees.

While eating I happened to glance down at my phone and I forget the exact verbiage but it was lit up bright red that the car temperature was 81 degrees and unable to reach the desired temperature. Kind of alarming, didn't know if the battery was actively combusting with the dogs inside or what. Ran out to the car and everything seemed fine; was not that warm in the car. I don't know where the temperature sensor in the car is but maybe it was getting blasted by a hot air vent or something. Not exactly confidence-inspiring.

If anyone has any recommendations for a cell- or wifi-enabled thermometer with phone app I'd love to hear it.

yea I never found the cabin temperature readings to be accurate at all.. probably has to do with why HVAC system struggles a lot.

It's in the teens outside where I live in PA today, for my 5 minute drive to work today, I pre-conditioned the cabin to ~60 degrees (target was 68) and then about halfway into my drive it started blowing cold air. I did a soft reset when I arrived, and stayed in the vehicle to see if things got resolved, but was still getting cold air after the reset. Gen 1 R1T.

I'll give it a day or two to see if this persists.

Same for me. Usually melting at 70 (set to 66) but today cold at 66, cold when all the way to high and still blowing cold air everywhere in between. Tried changing every setting but no love.

Parked in garage, and plugged in to charge, and when I got back in it was blowing hot.

I’m also hearing a new noise, kinda’ a growling/groaning noise that I attributed to it being unusually cold outside but I’ve been in colder spots before and never heard that. I’m wondering if these things go together.

Has anyone else noticed HVAC temp differences change the depth of color for the vents? Like borderline hot is pink, and HI is deep red. Opposite is light blue and dark blue.

Has anyone gone to service with this? If so, was there a hardware fix for this? New Gen 2 R1T owner here and I’m experiencing a lot of what I read here. Set HVAC at say 64 and the system blows past it and just keeps heating.
