Displayed speed limit often wrong

Data is for the road in general, not for each individual curve and this very instant. The displayed limit is for reference only. Not meant to replace you, the driver's eye and mind.

I don’t think anyone is abdicating their responsibility as a driver. If you’re going to supply a reference, it would be nice if it was correct. Where I am currently, speed limit signs seem to be miles apart. Speed limits change often, and are strictly enforced. My GEN 2 used to read signs, but doesn’t seem to any more.

Again, it's general reference for that road at large. Not turn-by-turn. Not to be taken literally. And data is from Google, not sensed then interpreted and display on the fly by cameras and software. Understand how things work, what it is you are complaining about and who is responsible (not Rivian).

In any case, more productive for you to report it through "share feedback" in your Rivian mobile app.

This feature has not yet been implemented with Rivian's in house autonomy system (though it should be coming this year).

It may have been a feature with the old Mobileye system, but I never verified if Rivian's implementation included that or not.

A) I am currently on Folly Island, SC. The speed limit for the entire island is 25 mph and VERY strictly enforced. My faithful Rivian often shows 30 mph. I understand that you feel that speed limits are not sensed “on the fly”, and I agree that that does not seem to be happening currently. This is my second Rivian. Over four years of Rivian driving I believe that speed limits were sensed and displayed in the past. I posted here to see if others were observing the same behavior before sharing feedback with Rivian. Just my .02. Your mileage may (and seems to) vary.

Try opening Google maps on your mobile device to see what speed limit it displays.

Wrong. Your Gen 1 absolutely does interpret and display on the fly using cameras.

It’s all from Google Maps. Both of our G1 and G2 cars say it’s 55mph in our subdivision where as it is actually 25. Rivian/Enterprise gave me a brand new Yukon for the week. It has Google Maps built in, and it was also saying 55mph in our sub.

It does use Google Maps, yes, but it ALSO uses vision. We have proven it multiple times.

It sometimes screws up parallel highways, like where an HOV section has a higher speed limit than the main lanes.

I see this frequently driving on I-66 in Northern Virginia. It’s 55 in the “regular” lanes, but 70 in the HOT lanes.

Truck routinely says 70 when I’m in the non-HOT lanes. ‘24 R1T.

I live on a 25mph dirt road that Nav thinks is 55mph everywhere except within view of a speed limit sign.

I can also verify that historically from the time I got my Gen1 R1S the speed is imaged from signs. On a particular section of highway that I used to drive frequently the posted speed was increased from 40 to 45. It would display 40 mph and change to 45 immediately after passing a sign. And then after about a minute it would revert to 40. And then back to 45 when the next sign was passed.

I have not paid attention to this feature for months, but I guess there is the possibility that this was a feature of the previous map integration, and changed recently in 2025.22 when Rivian switched to Google. Perhaps the imaged speed was abandoned. I'll check it out.

Has anyone else noticed that their Rivian no longer reads speed limit signs? The displayed speed limit seems to often be in error (we are currently travel in South Carolina), particularly on secondary roads.

It's not clear to me that it ever read speed limit signs. I have had my Rivian drive right past a 45 MPH speed limit sign and leave the displayed limit at 25 MPH. I had the same complaint about my Model S. For self driving we cannot rely on data embedded in maps which is often wrong. Speed limits change too often and it is virtually impossible to keep map speed limit data for the entire country (or even North America) up to date. The car must be able to react to temporary speed limit changes, especially school zones. The Tesla was especially bad with school zones. And yes I always do a full re-boot after a new software install. Kinda foolish not to.
