I think the brake pedal is the right call. IMO it would make sense to keep media paused and not take over bluetooth connections etc. until you hit the brake pedal.

Not so worried about climate (generally I want it started ASAP) but I can see why others would disagree.
I'd want to experiment with some different setups -- brake pedal, steering wheel buttons, stalks, button on the touch screen... I could see pros and cons for each of these, so being able to try a few different configurations would be nice. Rivian, if you're listening I'll happily be the guinea pig on this.

Seems simple enough to add a setting where it’s either the current behaviour or pressing the brake pedal starts things Up
Yeah Teslas wait for you to push the brake.

Music etc are all on but not full tilt before pressing brake, unless the car’s asleep.…at least that’s how I remember it from last time I dealt with one

Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous how the whole thing comes to life with a simple unlock. Sometimes just need to grab something from the truck or whatever. Seems like a waste of battery for sure and something I'm almost certain they'll change with an OTA. Brake pedal seems to make the most sense. That being said, with the latest OTA, the ability to vent windows on top of climate control is a very welcomed.

Side question: Is there a way to keep the climate synced for the front while having the back off completely? (I'm in bed, otherwise I'd dig into the menu). Every time I head out, I have to reach around and manually shut off rear climate so I can enjoy full blast AC with this ridiculous heat wave.

1) Since the whole system runs off a main computer I'm guessing the only two states are on/off and nothing in between. Similar to Telsa except they've had a few years to push software updates to help keep the vehicle in its sleep state.

2) I may not be understanding what you're saying but can't you just turn off the rear vents in main the climate control settings? I can't recall now but the rear only comes on when I turn it on.

Also does not take Bluetooth control until door is closed and butt in seat. disconnects if the door is open and seat is unoccupied. It makes for really great seamless transition into and out of the car.

So if you are going to just grab something out of the car while on the phone it doesn't take over.

On the left hand side of the climate screen is a toggle for front/rear. It allows you to adjust the rear controls from the main screen.

I just want the rear permanently off unless there is a passenger back there and they can turn it on and do as they wish. I very rarely have rear passengers, which is partly why I bought this truck. Side note: My Tundra has the most rear leg room and space of any vehicle I've ever owned, and the occasional passenger(s) love it. If I have 4 passengers in the Riv, I'm going to have to slide my seat forward and raise the backrest, as I'm 6ft tall and I drive in a very loungey position. For a long distance trip, that would suck.

It already works as you need it to, it sounds like you were messing with the rear screen instead of just turning it off from the main screen up front. My truck's in service now but I'm almost positive it remembers the last state. Not sure if it defaults to "rear off", only under certain conditions, or just remembers the last state. The few times I've checked out of curiosity to see if my rear climate was on after specifically using it on a previous trip, it wasn't.

Because sometimes I just want to hop into my truck or pop in the door really quick without the entire truck coming to life. The fans ramp up for battery and A/C preconditioning needlessly. Even worse, my music or podcast starts playing.

A power button solves this in the same way capacitive sensors on the door handles solves the proximity key issues. It’s a simple but effective affirmation of my intent rather than having the truck infer, often incorrectly, my intent.

To be clear, I’m not saying the truck needs a dedicated power button necessarily. I think you could repurpose an existing button or pedal or even add a virtual button on the touch screen.

I also understand some people like the current behavior, so this could be an optional setting. By default it works as it does today, but an optional on/off sequence would be really nice. Camp mode isn’t exactly what I’m looking for here. It needs to be more accessible than that.
100%. My only change would be to not use the brake pedal as the trigger. There are plenty of times, e.g., where I meet up with others and wait for their arrival from my vehicle and I don't need the vehicle on any more. If the vehicle is already on, how would one turn off the vehicle. I would have to get out, walk a certain distance away from the vehicle, wait for it to shutdown (or I guess just press the lock button), then go back to the vehicle, get in and avoid the brake. Yea, not a solution in my book.

As suggested, some other physical button/wheel would need to be repurposed for the R1 line. Perhaps with the R2 generation they can put in a dedicated On/Off button like I have in my Mach-E.
