Well soon it won’t matter much. Cellular data will be going through satellites so you can stream whatever you want anywhere in the world. So I guess technically you will have satellite music. Just not the way it used to be.

you can transfer your lifetime subscription (if desired) over to the Rivian. It is treated by SiriusXM as though it was a first-class XM radio with an antenna.
Good info and thanks. Something changed, as I also just asked AI and the $14/month answer I got once before from a Rivian person no longer seems to apply. I would have no need for any data plan in a car, so I was surprised when they previously told me I needed one for Sirius. Glad to know this is not the case now. Thanks again.

Kind of a adjacent to the discussion, but this is a cool option that Scout offers, satellite connectivity via a big roof mounted antenna (that also adds roof storage and a lightbar)

From my light reading and AI analysis of Rivian's FCC filings, I don't see any that include that ability. So far, the offerings for this require hardware compatibility, though ASTS promises more (which is currently vaporware).

I'm not an XM user and have no interest in it, so I haven't looked specifically at this. However, since there's no direct receiver in any Rivian, you need some form of data access to use it. You need to pay for/have an XM internet subscription, PLUS have to have data access for the car. That can be done by paying Rivian for their in-car service, connecting the car to your phone's hotspot, or a Starlink. The only seamless and super-easy option in my testing is the Rivian service. I tried using my phone hotspot and Starlink for car services, and it was flaky. This was over a year ago however.

Edit to add: Starlink on standby/limited mode is cheaper than Rivian's service and works everywhere. But there's some extra work in setting that up.

I didn’t mean through Rivian. I meant through your phone as a hotspot

Got it, this thread has gone so many directions, I wanted to be clear. I found that annoying enough to pay Rivian, but again, that was many updates ago. I'd love to hear how it works for you. I have 60GB of hotspot on my phone, so plenty to stream.

OTOH, it won't help at all with car control (but Starlink should I think).

That seems to highlight the confusion. I just asked AI about this and it said that Rivian will not require me to buy a data plan just to use Sirius. They are allowing the connection.

This is where it gets messy. I don't want to have to use/touch my phone to open a Sirius app every time I get in the car or use the phone's data. It's so easy now in my X3 with a satellite antenna. I just start the car and the radio plays Sirius as it was previously set.

Unfortunately due to the various hallucinations and limits of LLMs, especially ChatGPT, this might or might not be true. It's possible that XM has a deal with Rivian/AT&T to stream their stuff without any data plan, and my post could be wrong.

I asked Claude, which is terrible for this kind of research, and it thinks the Rivian has a receiver. Sigh.

SuperGrok thinks you can use it without any data subscription, which may or may not be true.

In case you weren't aware, starlink in standby mode no longer works while in motion.

Oh, that's right, that's another feature you get with the doubling in price.

Enshittification (also known as platform decay) describes the process where digital services and online platforms gradually degrade in quality to maximize short-term profits. Coined by author and technology critic Cory Doctorow, this phenomenon is everywhere from Google and Amazon to social media and streaming apps. [1, 2, 3, 4]

The 3-Stage Lifecycle
  1. The Honey Trap: The platform offers high-quality, heavily subsidized, or free services to attract a massive user base and achieve "lock-in".
  2. Shifting Surpluses: The platform degrades the user experience to benefit business customers (e.g., advertisers and merchants) who are now dependent on reaching the user base.
  3. The Enshittening: The platform finally degrades the experience for everyone—squeezing both users and business customers—to funnel maximum value straight to shareholders, leaving them with a frustrating, ad-heavy, or useless product. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

You do not need to have Connect+ to have SiriusXM. You do however have to have a separate Subscription from any other SiriusXM subscription you may have. It is just like having the App because it is not accessed via an Antenna. Therefore, you can get the "Extra" Channels" that are not available with just an Antenna.
The service and connectivity through the infotainment is fair at best. It cuts out way too often and sometimes stops working completely. When it works, it's great, but it is very inconsistent.

I was wondering if they have added a dedicated satellite antenna so you can get SiriusXM without having to stream thru a cellular based network.
I read that on the R1S & R1T you can only get SiriusXM via a cellular network by streaming it. I've heard you lose connectivity if you're somewhere out in the country where the cellular networks aren't as plentiful. It would be nice if the R2 had a dedicated satellite antenna.
The satellites capability availability in smart phones works for SMS and sometimes voice It won't work for streaming..
You can add Starlink mobile service
With a Starlink Mini antenna mounted on a cargo rail, connected to the Hotspot. You will need a voltage boost power adapter. Finding a way to get the power cable into the car can be a problem. Starlink mabile is expensive.

The more I read, the worse it sounds. This would need to get resolved before I could keep a future R2 on my list.
