I have external hard drive connected to my center console. So I believe it records 24/7 when I am driving. I’m not sure when I am parked and sitting in my vehicle, if it also records. Just in case I get people around my car and get say, a door ding, I’m able to capture it. I believe if my vehicle is locked and even though I am not in drive, it will record. I tried calling Rivian to confirm but they said they aren’t sure if it records when you sit in the vehicle, even if you lock it. Anyone know?

I got a message today indicating that external hard drive is full and I need to clear out the hard drive. Is there a way to have it constantly record and just override the old videos? So I don’t have to remove and connect to a computer and delete old videos? It seems inefficient to have to do this all the time when hard drive gets full.

I got the same message the day before yesterday, which is new for me (it's been in for over 30k kms), so I assume a software related issue from the latest update. Message is gone, but I haven't checked if it's still recording... will do that if I remember tonight

What’s the icon to show that it’s still recording? When you click the circle icon, turns red but that just means it’s saving the max 2 minute to the Rivian.

Anytime the vehicle is on, the stream should be recorded. You will see a drive cam icon in the main display that shows this. If the drive cam icon has a line through it that means there is a problem.

Once the drive fills up, the oldest stream files will be overwritten. Only drive cam footage is stored on the external drive (including manually captured drive cam footage). Motion cam and incidents are recorded to the internal storage. I know motion cam is kept for 10 days then its automatically removed. If you want to keep something you star it. You can also export the motion cam or incidents to the SSD but it isn't recorded there automatically.

The external drive should never give that drive full message unless your saving a ton of manual captures from drive cam. The system will automatically overwrite or purge streams to allow data to keep being written to it.

Maybe try an infotainment reset to see if that clears it.

Thanks, do you know if external drive records when you’re sitting in your vehicle and lock the doors? I think someone told me if the doors are unlocked, it will not record.

Cause I would have to remove the external hard drive and plug it into a laptop to see if it actually recorded. I don’t have access right now. The icon would always show whether vehicle is locked or unlocked. So I don’t know if that means it’s always recording.
