is this a way to distract us from the fact that the camera resolution sucks?

I have something similar on two of our other cars... it is something that is cool to see once... you never use it after that.
Yep. These kind of Gee-whiz tech features are a complete waste of time and resources. I day dream of a stripped down R1T that is just a solid built truck. I wouldn’t even expect to pay less.

I’d much rather have a zoomed out version of the current graphics in the driver’s display, so you can see if there are cars behind you as you switch lanes, etc.

Maybe it will use the cameras to give a wider view of the vehicle and surroundings as if viewed from a drone. This would be like the 360° view but bigger and from the perspective of a drone near and above the vehicle. I think I’ve seen this on another vehicle, maybe Land Rover?
Lucid has this in park mode

I'm surprised no one's suggested that 'drone mode' displays the camera views in the phone app, and let's you drive the vehicle from there.

Given it takes several minutes to usually connect to my car, I’d be concerned about insane latency.
:)

Like others, I’d like some keep it simple features first. Like a trip meter or odometer without an adventure.

It's like most of the features on your phone that you ask yourself "Who asked for this?"

Nah, too boring for Rivian. Maybe if you asked for an AR odometer which is shown floating in front of the vehicle on the center screen you’d see some progress.
Or maybe an odometer that is projected on the pano roof.
