I think there may be some difference in what people understand as the app being "open". To clarify, at least based on my experience:

App Open in forground - this obviously works.
App Open in background - when you swipe up to close the app, it's not "Closed", it's in the background but still running. It still works PAAK.
App Closed - This is when you "Kill" the app by swiping up halfway, and then swiping up AGAIN to kill the app. At that point you should get the following notification, but I have seen it not always notify.... When the app is killed, PAAK does not work - it should not work, unless there is some bug......

TLDR, the app can be in the foreground, or hidden in the background, and PAAK will work.

Wondering if anyone else has had this happen. I’ve called Service to have them pull the logs, mostly out of curiousity, but also in the event there’s a real bug to chase down.

Car sat in garage overnight, unlocked. Key fob is out of range. I go into the car this morning with my phone, bluetooth ON, but Rivian app closed.

Car turns on as normal (press brake pedal, shift into D), and drives out of the garage as normal like it sees a key. I -always- shut the app off when I’m not using the truck, but double checked, and indeed - the app was definitely not open.

Fired up the Rivian app, showed normal ”In Use” screen, because I was indeed still in Drive but stopped in my driveway.

Anyone else seen something like this? I’ll report back on what the techs say about the data log.

The only oddity I can think of is that my phone updated last night to the newest version of IOS.
This sounds serious. You should give me your address and leave the truck in your driveway so I can take a look at it ?

This is normal behavior for the vehicle. The default for the app when it is installed is to run in the background. If you close the app it is still running in the background. If you force close an app from app settings the vehicle will not start. I had my app set to restricted for quite a while due to excess phone battery drain. When I did the truck would not start or even open the doors from the phone unless I had the app open. As soon as I put the app back to Optimized or Unrestricted, it started acting like a key again, regardless of the app being opened. This on a Pixel 6 Pro. Any android should be the same. Apple should be similar. I haven't had one in a while.

Is this an iOS Privacy & Security -->Location Services setting issue?

I have mine set to "While Using App." That way I can quit the app on my iPhone walk around my carport and backyard with my phone in my pocket in peace without the car waking up, lighting up, unlocking, etc.

If set to "Always" the the truck wakes up and unlocks or the rear taillights always blink as if it's pinging my phone whenever I walk around with my phone on me - whether the app is launched, in the background, or fully quit.

Why not just turn off proximity lock for your home location?

Turn your phone off and try that way. That would pretty much confirm if its using the phone or not.

I’ve never been able to start the car without the app open. This is an anomaly for sure.
ahh. So, bluetooth connection to a recognized device alone isn’t enough?

Because it's pretty easy and convenient for me to launch the app, walk out to the truck, and let proximity lock do its thing. This time of year, I'm regularly launching it anyway to pre-cool in the desert heat.

It's now routine for me to quit the app when I walk into the house as well.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem

Exactly. The app needs to be “open” (either in background or actively in use). If it’s fully shut down / force-quit, the BT connection alone will not act as a key.

Your truck will still “see” the phone‘s BT, which you can confirm by looking at BT connections in the phone while you have the app fully closed / quit. But you won’t be able to drive off until the app is running somewhere.

Which is why this is so freaking weird, because I had the app force-quit yet the car allowed me to drive off.

Service is stumped and wants me to bring the truck in. Which I told them I’m happy to do … when they set me up for a tonneau repair this summer. :)

If you swipe up on the app in IOS it is closed and won’t function as a key. It even gives you a warning notification that the app is closed and your phone is no longer a key. I’ve played with this many times and you can stand around next to the truck all day long looking at your fully connected bluetooth connections and the truck will not unlock or do anything else.

To clarify for all - the app needs to be running, but not necessarily open. If it’s in background, that’s fine. But if it’s force-quit and not running in background, default behavior is to NOT allow the vehicle to move. This has been verified as the correct behavior per Rivian.

FYI service was stumped and wants to see the truck.
You're not wrong, Ive done what you said a couple of times, 2 if I remember. No phone, no fob, no card, no wrist band. I keep a card under the driver's seat... No way that would register to start the car. Always from home. Don't really care enough to worry about it. I rarely leave it unlocked at home now, and never when away from home.

For clarity, all these conversations that include phones should include android vs iPhone and current software. Otherwise em we are comparing apples to oranges. And we have no way of even knowing if we are talking about the Apple or talking about the oranges. IMHO

I know in my use if my app is closed the truck won’t open at all until I open the app

for Android, upon user setting, the app can start itself. if on, even app is closed by user, eventually, upon app's need, it can start itself.
For apple, i dont know. I have not used iphone for a longlong time.

May be your wife's phone is around (upstairs)?
