Not to end the conversation, but I just tested my Dual Performance and once I set it to Sport Mode it stays there through Drive, Park, exit, allow to lock then unlock and drive. Even the app tells me it is Sport Mode.

Regarding the comment about FWD in All Purpose, it is AWD until around 20 mph then drops out the rear engine for FWD. That is until the slightest bit of acceleration is requested and it seamlessly switches to AWD. You can watch it on the gauge display. Our Bronco Sport Badlands exhibits the same behavior (less 400+ hp) and is exactly the behavior I expected from the DM.

That's great to hear! Thanks. That is how everyone would want it to work.

Now back to Car and Driver. How many of their other "facts" are completely fabricated?

It "looks" like the rest of the article is pretty accurate although I thought the Performance got you the 21" wheels and a few extra miles per charge.

The reason I wanted the Performance was for the reason they couldn't "quantify", the availability of the Soft Sand mode. I am a ranger on an 18 mile beach and sand trail preserve and our F-series trucks are great in the sand but when it gets soft I end up switching the automatic transmission to manual because they don't manage the shifting very well. Our Bronco Sport has a Sand Mode and it does a credible job of pedal and transmission management. From speaking with other Rivian owners on the beach I have high hopes for the R1T. I won't take it out until summer when we have additional rangers working because I never trust a vehicle on the first beach trip!

If it's like the off-road modes on the quad, it will reset over night, not the next drive cycle. It *could* reset through a sleep cycle though.

Have you seen any reliable sources (since it seems C&D is not reliable) confirm that acceleration in all purpose mode is identical on the DM and DM performance?

As long as it lasts until I leave the beach I'm happy. My Bronco Sport turns off Sand Mode when the key is turned off.

No I haven't seen anything, but that isn't something I pay attention to and unless I heard it from Rivian I probably wouldn't put a lot of faith in it.

R1T Performance Dual Motor Max Pack
Sorry to further confuse the discussion but I tested this drive mode reset issue/question out on my DM Performance Max Pack and there is a bit more to the story. Yesterday during short trips running a few errands around town the truck stayed in Sport mode during these fairly short intervals. However after charging overnight when I got in the truck this morning, as soon as I shifted into drive, the truck alerted me it was about to switch back to all-purpose mode and was about to raise the suspension.
It’s unclear whether the mode reset was triggered due to the charging session or simply entering a deep sleep but it definitely defaults back to all-purpose. The good news is the truck stays lowered and gives you a heads up regarding the mode switch before completing the process, and it literally couldn’t be easier to just tap sport mode again to maintain the setting as you drive off but there is truth to this point in the C&D article. I generally drive in all purpose so hadn’t noticed this previously but will keep an eye out and report back with further observations if anything changes.

Interesting. I just noticed mine was asleep before going outside and then when it woke up it was still in sport mode. Maybe overnight will reset it.

Also the untruth in the article, as we can both attest, is this statement:“… because it resets to All-Purpose every time you exit the truck. “

That sucks, but it's not completely unheard of. I just took delivery of my wife's new i4 M50 and it does the same thing. Sport mode resets itself every time you get out of the car.
As does the EQE Benz. What’s more annoying not only does it reset sports mode it resets regen settings to standard every time vehicle turned off vs keeping it in high (where I want it).

Thankfully the BMW has a pretty high regen. You have to turn the mode on each time, which is annoying, but when in regen it is high enough to use as one pedal. The one thing I'm hoping it doesn't do is keep the fake engine sounds on. I got so used to the quiet it is very annoying.

Update. After an 18 hour nap the mode automatically reset to All Purpose.

Edit...DM is confirmed to stay in Sport thru driving cycles. All Below is meaningless as the Rivian DM behaves the way I would want (and I suspect most would want) per a DM Perf owner who tested....CD article has errant fact/s. End Edit....

I guess it's like the auto start stop feature that I bought an aftermarket tuner to turn off in Jeeps. One of pluses of a manual transmission ICE car too....no auto start/stop.

Maybe someday people will be able to get at these types of things in the setting somewhere and defeat them.

If I had a DM, I would certainly want it to stay in DM mode all the time and not always default to FWD.
This is an older thread but updating based on latest software.

Owner of gen2 R1S PDM

Driving mode will revert to all purpose and height reverts to auto after 4 hours per manual. Last software update seems to have sealed the deal. The Gen2 manual reflects this.

Acceleration curve definitely different in all purpose but not yet clear to me that total power is restricted when not in sport however I’ve head that from other sources.

Sport mode not sticking is annoying, but resetting from off road to on road has got to be the most ridiculous decision ever.

Has any car ever been not on a road when the driver got out but then was on a road the driver returned? That is not ever going to happen. if you're not on a road, the car should not be resetting itself to on road mode. Ever.
