I’m thinking of possibly pulling the trigger on a dual standard R1S from the shop. I’m wondering if anyone can provide real world range for road trips? With my quad I’ve never had range anxiety as me and my families bladdders give way before we get too low in range. I live in SoCal and most road tripping would be within California.

Compare the efficiency to what you normally get. Also, if you plug in some trips into ABRP you can get a really good idea how it will perform. Battery size is about 92 kWh usable on standard range gen2. My quad R1S has a lifetime efficiency of about 2.25 mi per kWh..standard dual will be slightly more efficient. At the efficiency of my quad I would get about 240 miles range with the standard 100 to 0. The true story is told by the 70% rule.

On a road trip, you want to limit usage to 70% of the battery (not charging above 80% or discharging below 10%).

Gen2 dual standard has a smaller battery than 106kwh which is the gen2 large size. Gen 2 standard is 92kwh.

My winter average with a Gen2 Dual Standard R1T was right around 2.0 which makes 182mi. As the weather warms, I’m currently up to 2.35kw/mi average, putting us at 214mi. I suspect I’ll end up with about 2.7 average for April-October to make it 246mi, just about the EPA average. Hope that’s helpful!

The battery is 70% of your quad and the efficiency is just slightly better. Multiply your current range by 70% and it will be close.

Thanks everyone. Appreciate your feedback. Test drive the dual today. Wasn’t overly impressed except for Driver plus, which was much better

I posted this recently in the facebook forum, but putting here as it is my real world experience of my first roadtrip...

First longer road trip in my 2 month old 2025 R1S Dual Standard. It was a college tour trip for our HS kid (6 schools across NY). Left Boston and drove straight to Rochester, then made our way back through Syracuse, Binghamton, and out to Long Island where we drove to various points as far east as Port Jefferson. Just drove back today for our final leg. 1232.7 miles (Rivian has ~2400 total).
Was unsure of the LFP and how it would perform on an extended roadtrip given the range (on the 20” AT it max charges at 259 miles).

While I am not getting that, I am seeing 210 - 220 or so once it dialed in - it definitely got more accurate the more I drove it and the more charge /discharge cycles. For my east coast roadtrips this is generally fine given our density of chargers. This trip had decent elevation gain with lots of ups and downs through the Catskills.

All in all very pleased with the LFP in good weatherher conditions (it didnt do as well in cold weather on a shorter trip to Burlington VT.

Charging at EVgo was the worst experience - most expensive, half the chargers were not functioning and took 5 minutes to get app to work and recognize the car to charge.

Tesla (politics aside) was the best experience. Cheapest to charge, more locations, instant recognition of vehicle.

I did charge at one Rivian charger. It took longer to recognize than the Tesla but not by much. Price was same as Tesla. Charging location in Hartford was convenient with lots of food options.

No glitches or other issues. Sent it through its first car wash successfully as well. Happy to be a Rivian owner (3rd EV) and glad to be rid of the Model X.

Would love to know if this tracks with the experiences other LFP owners are seeing. I am not a lead foot but didn’t try to get the most range out of the vehicle either. Just normal driving.

Thank you for the reply. Great info. So how many miles would you usually go between charges? What was your average speed?

I have a quad so I’m pretty in tune with range, driving conditions, etc. I’m just wondering if changing to the dual standard with cause me to suffer from range anxiety, which I never have with the Quad.

Have a Gen1 Quad and recently picked up a 25 Standard. So far not impressed with the LFP performance. Range is not meeting expectations especially compared to the Gen1 Large pack, despite the standard being 'more efficient'. Paper vs reality I suppose. Never experienced range anxiety in our quad but this standard is a nail-biter on every trip so far.

Damn! That’s what I was afraid of. How far are you realistically going between charges?

Around town--as advertised. Great efficiency.

On our routine 130mi trip over the mountains. Can't make it with anything less than 85% start in mild weather and conservative speed/driving. It's a real problem.

Generally around 180 - 190 miles between stops on the long end - depending on our needs and destinations. Max was around 200 I think. I was between 72 - 76mph for the most part.

🤦🏻‍♂️ Thanks for the correction!

If you want to do your own math:

Usable capacity * average efficiency in mi per kWh . Example 92 kWh * 2.0 mi per kWh efficiency gives a 100 to 0 range of 184 miles. @ 2.5 mi per kWh it jumps to 230 miles...etc
