Perhaps a taboo topic, but I can't be the only person "on eggshells" wondering when Rivian will announce 2022 price adjustments. They cannot ignore the competition setting the bar for nicely equipped EV trucks over $70k that rapidly escalate to six-figures.
Sure if by "competition" you only mean EV pickup truck. The F150 Lightning and Silverado EV are a size class larger than the R1T. If Rivian tried to price match the R1T against those two it would be like BMW setting the price for an electric 3 Series to match an electric E-Class Mercedes. Size classes are relevant and while the larger pickups are currently competition simply because there isn't anything else, ultimately the R1T's competition will be an EV Ranger, Tacoma, Colorado, Canyon (especially Denali), etc.

Rivian does not want to find itself in a place where an EV GMC Canyon Denali is $10-$15k cheaper than an R1T.

The articles could be wrong, but I specifically read that $40,000 is including the 400 mile range battery and that a lower priced version will become available at some point, with a lower capacity battery. We know how good "journalists" are these days!! LOL
Definitely wrong. A work/fleet truck doesn't need 400mi of range, nor can it feasibly cost that little when you do the math on a 200kwh battery.

Everything they offer will be similar to Ford in spec/price as it always is.

For the individual consumer, you're 100% right.

But let's be honest - Ford and Chevy are targeting their $40k variant at one market alone: Fleets.

And they might sell tons there.

Tesla's $40k goal is to generate buzz and then cancel due to lack of interest.
Smithery,

I think you're spot on. While they are targeting fleets, they're still wisely dangling a carrot to gain the interest of the masses. Sadly, although fleet buyers may be pleased with the outcome, the individuals lured by the noise about "Less than $40k and coming to a dealer near you!" likely will not be pleased. Their actual cost of either vehicle (and it sounds like we can now add the Silverado to that mix), with any performance and features, will be close to the R1T in price.

Still, they have created the buzz you mentioned. Hell, thanks to Tesla, sledgehammer and shot put sales records have gone through the roof! (or maybe we should say "through the window!".) ?

All kidding aside, it is nice that the major legacy ICE-truck manufacturers have seen the writing on the wall and are putting real resources and energy into electrics. There will be plenty of first time truck buyers, like myself, but each of the biggies will start to convert their long-standing truck buyers to their BEV lineups and we'll get closer and closer to the tipping point favoring EV's. We won't reach that point any time soo.... in the near future.... but it is coming.

Obviously, Elon deserves a great deal of credit for everything that has happened since he stepped on to the stage, but RJ has taken the war to a new level, and in a new direction. And now that Rivian has rattled cages, it seems all car and truck companies are taking EV's and ET's quite seriously. As I posted elsewhere yesterday, it was great to see MotorTrend recognize RJ for his contributions to the International Automobile Industry by elevating him to the runner-up spot in their Person Of The Year Award for 2022. I'm pretty sure he's already deflected credit and given it all to the entire team. A year from now, my money's on him capturing the top spot with R1T's, R1S's, and EDV's roaming on roads (and off) all around the country.

This show is getting more and more fun to watch with each passing week!

Again, congrats to RJ and everyone at Rivian!

"Make it happen!"

The Chevy reveal will help Rivian too. Chevy is reasonably competitively priced with the Ford. At $105,000, it's more than Ford's highest offering, but is absolutely a superior vehicle that was designed to be an EV rather than Ford's ICE conversion that will be outdated in 2 years. In any case, both the Ford and Chevy are too expensive for many. Maybe, Chevy won't force you into a $10,000 option package just to get the bigger battery? But, unless you need a true full size pickup for work, then the Rivian is pretty attractive at its price point. Smaller vehicle, but does offer more than the Ford. They Chevy probably has more features. The Rivian was designed some 7-8 years ago. Being a startup company, has taken that long to get it to market. Chevy is more recently designed, clearly taking many of the positives from the competitors and incorporating them in. They're very late to the market, but that also has some advantages. I wish they wouldn't reveal these things until they can be delivered in no more than a year. Waiting 2-3 years for a vehicle is just too long. Too much can change in that much time. Not only with the vehicles themselves, but with people's lives and needs. GM should have left the focus on the production of the Hummer for a bit longer. Then announced the Sierra. If they did that and could deliver in mass quantity within a year, they'd knock it out of the park. I guess Tesla now has the leg up on all of them. They've already incorporated changes into the Cybertruck based on what others have done that they didn't think of ahead of time. Now, they'll be able to top anything the others have to offer since they still haven't revealed a production version yet. These wait times are just frustrating. Credit to Rivian, as a startup, they managed to beat them all to market.

I sure hope my mid-year 2022 R1T L.E. still costs me what it says today... but I'm a bit anxious about it rising up in the +$10k range.
I hope that the price stays around $73,500 for the R1T I'm looking for in the next 4 years. I can justify the price to be able to keep that vehicle for 15-20 years and use it as my RV for camping trips. I really hope the price doesn't get escalated. It would be the only loan at that point (with the house paid off). It also has everything we need and want from a truck.

I get that Ford and Chevy are trying to cater to a traditional full size truck market. I consider myself in the truck market, but not necessarily the full size truck market. I knew that I wanted an EV, an upscale interior with seating for 5, and a bed for hauling bikes, boards, and home project stuff. I wanted something bigger than a Ranger but not necessarily a full size. From the pictures I've seen online regarding cabin space, Rivian appears larger than Tacoma, Ridgeline, Ranger, and Canyon. Rivian is the sweet spot for me. I don't think I'm alone.

Its great that Rivian will have no tailpipe emissions, but I'm not fully convinced the environmental/carbon savings is all that great until the grid gets cleaner. I do however think that electricity prices will be be more stable than gas prices in the coming years as the government has clearly signaled they intend to incentivize EVs/Charging and less so for the oil industry. I appreciate RJ's vision, but the "green" aspect is secondary for me. I like that I'll be able to go on 100-200 mile trips for hiking, biking, and other activities knowing that I'll be paying less to charge than I would to fuel an ICE vehicle.

What I think is great is that Rivian appeals to people like me and those who are all-in on reducing emissions.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned in these price comparisons is that we're effectively buying the R1T at wholesale pricing. In the typical manufacturer to dealer model, the manufacturer makes money when they sell the unit to a dealer, not when the unit is retailed to a consumer. In order to support a dealer network, additional profit margin is baked into the MSRP for the dealer. Rivian's factory-to-consumer model eliminates that extra mouth to feed. Speculating here, but Rivian could potentially have the same profit margin for a $75k R1T as Ford has for a $90k Lightning.

Just formally cancelled my Lightning reservation. Frankly, I think I might be done with Ford. I hope Rivian gets this right and delivers my truck in the promised Oct-Dec time frame. If not, I think I'm going to give up on getting an EV.

Too many people keep repeating the mark up thing, but my ford dealer and 10 others locally have said reservation holders would be subject to no markup over MSRP. I decided to cancel my Lightning order because I cannot justify 80k for what I think is a compromised vehicle. I would gladly pay 78k on my R1T, so I will cross my fingers that I dont have to wait too long seeing as I changed my R1S order to an R1T this week.

I’ve been following several Lightning forums. Ford just released pricing for the Lightning and a lot of reservation holders are unhappy. The XLT with Extended Range (300 miles) comes in at $73K and doesn’t even include leather. The Lariat with ER comes in at $79K……Rivian’s value proposition is much higher than Ford here. I’m guessing Rivian reservations increase.

I just hope Rivian doesn’t raise their prices to align with Ford.
I saw a report a couple of days ago that said they've seen as much as $30K in some cases.
Ha ha! I just cancelled my Lighting reservation on Ford.com and was almost instantly charged $100 by my local Ford dealer! WTF? Are they kidding me? :CWL::rolleyes::surprised:

You were charged? What does the dealership indicate the charge was for?

If P1T costs 75K with a spare wheel, with a charger and 1000, then Ford Lariat 79K. Ford also has a lot of pluses and Rivian minuses. If Rivian can only be used on a grocery trip, then in Ford I can carry ladders and tools.

I think you might be misinformed about the emissions of EVs. Even with a "dirty" grid the emissions are so much less than an ICE vehicle. Many studies and reports have made that clear. And with an EV the grid is getting cleaner and cleaner every day. If you buy an ICE car the emissions are the same no matter what changes. Please buy the EV.
