you don't have to use the app. I would also hope the truck wakes up/unlocks without me needing to pull my phone out. I also want to be able to use my watch. That would be nice at home when I want to grab something out of the truck and not needing to grab my phone.

Phone key on my BMW requires the phone to be taken out and swiped across the door handle, then placed in the NFC reader (charger) to start the vehicle. Its good but the app is easier.

Even if he’s planning on the next one he’s going to say soon to give Rivian some wiggle room. If he says next and they run into an unforeseen situation he looks like a dick for going back on his promise.

If Apple deployed it on their end chances are high that it will roll out in next update or the one after. I’d say by end of October there’s a high chance we will have it.

Agree - but looking at his reddit profile he does use the term next update from time to time (https://www.reddit.com/user/WassymRivian/). He seems to be cognizant of the term he chooses, which I appreciate.

Honestly it's awesome how much he does interact with the community. He's a real asset to their team.

I love my Garmin for athletic and outdoors stuff, but I recently pulled my gen 1 apple watch ultra out of the drawer after signing up for the US Mobile $6.50/month watch plan. I forgot how nice and slick the iphone integration is. I will certainly enjoy having my key on it, as I like going places without my phone. Everything I need my phone for is on the watch.

I'm one of those guys now that runs with 2 watches (allowing me to leave my phone behind) - my apple watch for music and my Garmin for activity tracking (apple watch doesn't even come close to matching Garmin functionality on that front). I know you can download music to the Garmin, but just being able to strap on the Ultra and stream is so much less friction.

I assume you have an iPhone? My Garmin is linked to my Samsung. There is a Garmin Pay feature, so if the NFC pay functionally is what is used, maybe there is hope for Samsung Garmin users.

Wearing two watches is an interesting idea. Can I get an Apple Ultra and get full use without getting an iPhone? I probably won't do that but it is an interesting idea. Not carrying my phone on a long run would be nice. I bet a Samsung watch would do the same thing. And it isn't square.

That;s the old NFC keys. the new apple key implementation uses ultra wide band. no need to pull phone out.

Yes - I have an iPhone. I don't think you can activate an Apple Watch without one. I'm sure Samsung or Pixel Watch have similar functionality.

There may be hope for android watches though - Garmin may be a reach, but it looks like both Samsung and Pixel watches are capable. I think they all use UWB though.

I forgot that my Epix had tap to pay - I need to set that up again. It's rumored Garmin is introducing LTE in their watches this fall, so it will be interesting to see what that looks like. Folks think it's really just going to be text, phone, limited data and satellite connectivity (to not kill their great battery life) but who knows. I probably wouldn't get rid of my Apple Watch if Garmin beefed up their offerings, but I would consider moving my watch data plan to it if it met my music needs.

Unfortunately, yes. This is also why Gen1 and Gen2 key cards and fobs (and Adventure Band) are not cross-compatible.

It's ok mate. It was just a matter of time before we had to endure the horror of using PAAK. Only the OG1s will know what it's like to walk up to your car and the door handles open and you drive off.

My understanding is this:

• Both generations have the required NFC reader(*) for NFC only carkey support.
• Only gen2 has the required UWB radio for the UWB/Bluetooth proximity(**) carkey support.

* we don’t know if there is a limitation in the communication between ECUs in gen1 that makes key management impossible with the dynamic addition/rotation/revocation etc expectations that carkey has - it was always disconcerting to me that a SC visit was required for card paring on gen1 whereas for gen2 it can be done over the phone.

** Apple being Apple call NFC proximity as well I suppose a few inches is technically proximity, but whatever. It’s called tap to pay etc, not 1” proximity to pay. Meh.

Anyway I think people can be rightly a bit upset that WAAK is never coming to gen1 in an official capacity. But as carkey was touted as gen2 exclusive from the initial PR, and never trailed at all for gen1 at any point I think no one can be legitimately butt hurt that this is not coming in any capacity to gen1 - even though there is a possibility that it could be done for NFC only operation.
