Personally I think you are overthinking it. I have this exact mount and just ziptied a 2' pool noodle around the flag pole in one spot (make sure to get the color pool noodle that matches your team colors!) to prevent the pole from scratching the car. But in 3 years of using it, I've never seen it blow sideways enough to knock it over.
Thank you! That's exactly what I was hoping to hear when I posted this question - someone with real-time use. I saw some tall fiberglass poles in the field where we parked and they were really sagging and flopping around, so I wanted a much more sturdy telescoping aluminum pole. I'm going to try it (with pipe insulation as a protector) and we'll see how it goes. I can always beef up the base if I see the need.

lol @ shouldn't
Many many (many many) years ago I used to work for a party rental company - when we would set up tents in parking lots, we'd frequently anchor them with metal spikes hammered into the blacktop. It *can* be done, with enough motivation, but it's really not good for the parking lot LOL

We're parked in grass so driving stakes into the ground isn't a problem - as long as it didn't rain the entire week before the game, but I'm really hoping to only need stakes to keep my canopy grounded.

So get a portable hole, then, and pound it into the grass - heavy-duty rebar or angle iron, with a couple of rings welded to it, so you can slip your flagpole into it.
