Someone always has to pay the deductible. If there's another party at fault and they are deemed responsible, then your insurance company will go after them for your deductible. If they aren't successful for any reason, then you're responsible to pay it. Even if it's damage resulting from an "act of God", then you're stuck paying your deductlbe since the insurance company can't collect the money from God.
That’s all true, but if the world was just Rivian should pay for the entire repair because if their tech worked worth a sh!t I’d have the license plate of the guilty party and she’d be paying the $3200+ repair bill.

I park away from the other cars way out where no one else is because the walk is too far. As well I park in spots next to a spot that has no spot there. That limits the dings by 50% alone. I look for the places a shopping cart may roll to.. as well the places a vehicle may cut the isle and clip a corner so to speak. This makes backing out of a space easy, there is less parked vehicles behind.
I follow all the same rules, but nothing is 100%.

So an update for any interested party. Would you like to know what two dings in a door will cost you if PDR isn’t an option? $3256.20… because of a careless old woman, and even more careless developers at Rivian I get to pay $3256.20 to repair damage to my R1S or at least the $500 deductible. That’s a great outcome don’t you think. Get your sh!t together Rivian!!!

Did Rivian promise you a license plate reader? I understand why you are annoyed, but saying Rivian should pay for the repair is ridiculous.

You wouldn't have been able to get any compensation in that situation anyway. Trust me, been through this before. The old lady isn't going to be held liable for a door ding, especially when the wind caused her door to be pulled out of her hand.
My State Farm agent says otherwise.

It’s called sarcasm. No, obviously Rivian didn’t promise me a license plate, nor do I truly expect them to pay, but their gear guard mission statement says “Gear Guard is Rivian’s security system that connects Rivian hardware (interior screen, braided steel cable, cameras) and software technology to keep a watchful eye on your vehicle and gear while you're away.” Well, all that watchful eye did was record someone damaging my R1S and then let them drive off Scot-free without recording anything useful. When Tesla allows you to customize how long you record after an event, view from the app, etc. it’s a pretty big miss on Rivian’s part to make Gear Guard so completely useless.

Maybe using the motion detection setting would have been wise in this instance. Sorry if this has been suggested but I ran out of energy reading how Rivian was at fault (although I enjoyed the tongue in cheek posts).

I mean we're putting in 1TB drives, we don't need 2 months of 30sec recordings, I'd rather be able to set my event recording parameters.
Totally agree on needing longer clips

I’ve also had issues with Gear Guard not triggering at all. Like someone wrote on my windshield in a parking lot and gear guard didn’t record any clips :/

Rivian’s not at fault, the careless lady was at fault. My goal here is to illiterate one of many areas in which Rivian can improve, so that when these unfortunate yet inevitable things happen we can make better use of Gear Guard or other features. As a resident of Bloomington Illinois I’m a huge supporter of Rivian as a R1S owner, as an investor, and as a preorder holder of two R2Ss and a R3X when available, but as much as I love my R1 it’s not perfect. And this is cathartic for me because if anyone will understand it would be owners like yourselves. If you’re out of energy stop ready my posts.

I agree, as well, the standard is all parking lot dings are just that. Ok, more expensive, but still par.

Only thing I don't like is having to clear all the alerts of me approaching my own truck before it PAAk activates

I park my R1S in a public commuter train lot every day. Someday it’s gonna get dinged. Such is life. Hopefully the first ding will come from some off-road adventure scraping a rock, tree, or otherwise doing what the truck is made to do.

The only thing that strikes me as bothersome here is the notion of paying over $3k to repair a minor cosmetic issue. I agree that is absurd.

My State Farm agent says otherwise.

Odds are you'd be out of luck, especially if it ended up as a court case. Been there, done that and learned the hard way.

Here's the ONLY way you'll ever see a dime--if the old lady happens to have a car insurance policy herself and she has property damage liability coverage, then your insurance company could potentially collect from her insurance company. Otherwise, you're out of luck since a parking lot door ding isn't covered under collision or comprehensive coverage.

My State Farm insurance policy is covering it as collision. Illinois is not a no fault state, and property damage, and liability are minimum requirements for auto insurance. Without the law is pretty strict and will result in license and tag suspension. It’s mute at this point as there’s no way to find them anyway. I had a call with a Rivian rep this morning and they’re looking at making some changes to gear guard in future releases to improve some things one of which, I urged, is making the gear guard record for at least 1 minute, but also maybe user tunable.

That makes no sense for so many reasons, but good for you, I guess?

You have no deductible? Because a door ding can be fixed for far less than the average deductible, unless the damage is far more severe than a parking lot door ding.
