Hi Folks,

Just did a ~250+ mile round trip to southern Maine today with our Gen1 R1S LE that we recently got used with fairly significant mileage (55k).

I wondered what range would look like, has 22” sport dark with Michelin LTX the original owner put on to replace original 20” AT’s pretty recently, and crossbars I haven’t bothered taking off yet.

I drove in conserve the whole time, but was a mix of 70mph highway and 55mph local highway with a bit of city driving.

Got home with 65 miles left. Drove at least 250 miles. Temperature was between 35-50F throughout the day. Started with full charge conditioned cabin pulled from charger.

Very impressed with how accurate the range was and a bit surprised as I figured the 22” wheels would get me barely 300 in EPA conditions basically, but the truck says 321 at 100% and seems to be very near accurate even without ideal outdoor temps or 21” wheels or range wheels.

Pleasantly surprised and feeling great about road trips camping with the family this summer! Our Model Y Long Range was rated for 330, but we never got close to that, even in the summer with AS tires.

Glad you’re getting such good range. I only get about 1.6 with my RTT over the bed in similar conditions, but I’ve always gotten worse efficiency with all my EVs than most people. I think I need to learn how to drive better or something!

Haha, I do think the RTT takes a pretty big hit with wind resistance I suspect. Which is the biggest efficiency drag for EV’s next to going above 65/70mph, from what I understand. I also feel like my R1T Dual in AP is a bit less efficient than the R1S Quad in Conserve, from early observations. I’m sure it’s been analyzed, but I suspect something to do with the wind resistance differential of the two body styles.

I think too much focus goes to tire selection when discussing efficiency and not enough focus on driving style.
Want to tweak more range? Reduce hiway speed by 5mph.
You can confirm energy consumption by using the real time readout that is available on the driver display. We have a LE quad with 20 AT tires and keep speed to 65-70 on the freeways and interstate highways in conserve. The only time we use the 835 horsepower is entering freeways when the person in the right lane refuses (or can't) merge over. They can see what acceleration looks like.

Funny but you know they have right of way when you're merging right?

With our combo (which was the other way round from yours) I felt the same way - that the quad in conserve was a tiny bit more efficient - I suspect that in reality they are basically the same (gen1 quad in conserve and dual in AP) but in conserve you tend to drive well… …more… …conservatively? :D

Spent some time learning graphql this weekend, should have a site up soon hopefully to start to collect some drive data in a way that facilitates apples to apples comparison a bit easier.
