I stick with Standard or drive in Snow mode with Low regen because my quad is pretty tocky in High. Glad to hear Gen 2 is smoother.
But you maybe onto something....maybe it is smoother because they implemented exactly what you have done by using low and snow. Reducing the maximum regen braking effort would also result in smoother operation.

2024 R1S Quad in Forest Green
Thanks for sharing! I'm happy to see Rivian making progress. To me, some of the roughness was what turned me on about it. Reminded me of older jeeps. It's an adventure vehicle after all. It sounds like Rivian has smoothed some of the rough edges and I like that though.
every time I put my gen 1 R1S on sport mode and on the lowest suspension / firmest ride, it feels like I’m riding on a horse.

kind of a weird uncomfortable feeling but I like it :)

First Impressions Well, I decided to go down to the Atlanta space, and they happened to have one for viewing, and one for driving…so I booked a demo last minute. They accepted…and immediately when sitting in it, I don’t know what they did, but for the drivers seat, it has a bit more room…I am 6’3 so having lots of room helps. The frunk is definitely smaller, but not much smaller. Still bigger than many frunks. Door is lighter, I prefer the heavier feel of the gen 1. The new light bar looks excellent, and I noticed the quality of the interior felt put together better. The new UI is amazing, and the camera quality is insane, and loving the camera turn signals.

Regen Braking:
This is so much smoother, and efficient. Much more easy to modulate, and won’t give a whiplash, while still being strong…and the low setting is almost like coasting. No more high regen.

Quietness:
The example I drove was a dual standard with 22inch sport rims. It was like a library in there compared to the gen one. Extremely quiet in regards to wind noise, and you can tell the different above 70 also…and the air compressor wasn’t loud either….in this heat wave of 95 degrees. AC was great, and I did not hear the motors at all except for flooring it.

Ride Quality: This was the determining factor for me. Going over the huge potholes and rough roads of downtown Atlanta WITH 22 inchers, I was taken back of how smooth it was. It didn’t feel anywhere as harsh or anything as the gen 1. The firm setting is like soft in the old one, but even more controlled. Excellent ride quality over smooth pavement, and the dampening control is excellent, very smooth ride…now matches the price tag. Easily comparable to my MDX Type S and X7 in terms of air suspension ride quality. Great improvements.

Acceleration:
I don’t know if they changed the throttle mapping with the dual, but it’s so much smoother with power delivery than it already was, and seems to have more response and torque even though the numbers didn’t change. It had a wow factor…I didn’t feel like I was missing out much from the performance upgrade much less the quad..and yes, top speed is 130. Don’t ask…

Handing and Final Impressions:

To me, it handles much more predictably and less jittery and unsettling when you really push it. Handles like a dream…that said…Gen 1 handles amazing also. Overall, it’s an evolution and improvement of an already great product. I’ll be placing my order tonight. Feel free to ask any questions.

Question, you refer a lot to "more", "less", etc. Which model are you comparing it to? Some of these I think may be differences in the quad/dual in gen 1, where they adjusted things based on their in house motors. I had drove a friend's quad truck (compared to my dual S), and noticed the motors were a big rougher/louder.

Thanks. Do you know if you have the option for the same regen as the gen1 quad? I’ve been one pedal since 2017 and love the high regen.

2025 Rivian R1S DS (on order)
Picked up my Gen 2 DS a couple days ago. Took a 20 min test drive in a Gen 1 over a year ago so could not compare too much. Coming from a Model X, I initially thought the ride in my Gen 2 was too floaty, but then changed the suspension to firm and now it feels really good.

Even with this dual motor, acceleration is plenty quick and so much smoother than my old X where the front axles would start to shudder with any hard acceleration. 0-60 is the same as my X100D, but there’s way more torque and that’s what I feel most driving around.

Compared to the X the standard regen braking still feels high/touchy to me and can certainly lead to that abrupt body movement forward/back with decel/acel, but I really think that’s more me learning to modulate the accelerator pedal better. I know this bc parking this bigger car in my single door garage space for the first time felt like I was back in high school driver’s ed, lol.

Yeah, but as mentioned above, I’m really impressed with the quietness of the cabin and how solid this thing feels — it’s a freaking vault. Haven’t heard any suspension noise or anything yet. Having said that, I’m most impressed with the body control and the application of torque (or braking?) to the wheels of this thing in corners — it’s astounding that something this heavy can handle like this. And this is just the dual!

Thank you! I kind of already posted some pics in another order thread here so didn’t want to make a new one. Plus it’s another white one?. I will post whenever I have useful info, like efficiency numbers and charging, for the community.

Do you have any idea how much of the improved ride quality is the result of the latest software update?

The improved ride quality is mainly due to some mechanical changes to the suspension also. Gen1 will be getting an update soon to fix the ride quality some more. It won’t be as good as gen2, but should be better than what it is currently.

At 130mph…I heard some wind noise from the windshield and side mirror area…but not bothersome. At around 70-80, it’s so much more silent compared to gen1. A bit of wind noise, but that’s expected with the shape. However, it’s very quiet.
