Just finalized my order for a R1S. It’ll be parked outside and looking for a tidy solution for the charging unit I see some charging pedestals online and was wondering if you all had a good solution that you created at home for a stand alone charging station that you’d like to share?

My charger is inside the garage and I just plug in the truck with the cord under closed garage door. Wiring an outdoor charger is going to be a pretty penny as conduit/wiring by the foot would add up along with the labor to meet code.

Mine is attached to the outside of the block wall of my shop.
Drilled a hole through the block to feed the cord through to a 40 amp connected 14-50R.

Is some type of bollard / pedestal needed to hold the evse?

Wouldnt be necessary. But a sturdy solution to hold it

Maybe post a picture of the vehicle parked in the area where charging will take place.

I have the EVSE inside the garage. I cut a small groove in the concrete under the garage door that the cable lays in. Cable never touches the garage door. Nice and tidy. Cable holder mounted discretely outside the garage.

Not sure if folks will like or hate this but I have a fair amount of Amp/Service to my home and I don’t use it all really so I ran a large gauge wire to a sub panel (inside a shed) then through the shed to the charger. The sub panel has a 60 amp breaker in it for this one charger but I’m sure we’ll have multiple full sized EVs within 5 years and so was planning for concurrent charging with decent performance. Just something to think about if you’re installing things in close proximity to the electrical panel - I did a large renovation on the house so ran 2 gauge wire to the charger location pro-actively.

For years I’ve charged using a portable EVSE on a 30A plug and running the cord under the garage door. It’s fine. I bought a wall mount cord hanger on Amazon and put that on the wall outside.

I also have my Tesla J1772 unit mounted inside my garage close to the garage door, then have the cable fished "under" my garage door by cutting a small notch in the wood framing around my garage. I then have a docking station mounted to the outside of my garage on the brick. Cable stays permanently outside. I'll try and grab some picks this evening.

Love this long term (maybe not so long term given the number of EVs now hitting the market) thinking.

I mounted the charger inside my barn and built an enclosure that matches the barn siding just big enough to hold the plug. The plug is out of the weather and the cable feeds easily through a hole in the barn wall. It is out of the way in a corner when not in use and fed inside.

Are you able to describe (or show us a picture) of where the vehicle will be?

The best solution is probably to install the charger (or use the mobile charger) in a garage and route the cable to the vehicle parked outside. There are EV rated extension cords if you need more length. Or you can mount it on the outside of the wall.

Otherwise, any number of charging units and pedestals (even Amazon has them) will work in your situation.
