Have you considered Kia EV9 or Ford Mach-E? Both have large discounts and meets your range requirements. New Mach-E comes with the heat pump so it will be much better in the winter range.

I own 2023 R1S and if I was looking today, probably would not buy R1S. Might see how R2 is but not available for awhile. Fundamentally, R1 is a too much of a truck for our needs. It's built on frame rather than the unitized body and drives like a truck and is too heavy in its feel. Our use case is much more in line with what R2 will be than R1 today. We only got it because my wife liked the looks of the vehicle.

When we are ready to replace the R1 in couple of years, there will be lot more options including R2, electric Range Rover, Wagoneer S, and so on....
This is precisely my situation. R1 is too big for me. R2 would be ideal, I am in the wait list, but need a replacement until it becomes available. Some how not a fan of Kia, Huyndai or Ford. Maybe I am not used to them.

If tech is at all important to you, the only real alternative is Rivian. If it's not a priority the other makes are good. I switched from Mach E to R1S largely because of tech

Yeah R1 is definitely too much Truck/SUV for me as a daily driver, but has been great for road-tripping. 180mi per day seems like a bit of both. My wife wanted the space and third-row back that she had on her prior minivan, and she loves the R1S, but no doubt that for 80% of our use-case, the R2 (or her current Q8 e-tron) would suffice. I’m curious to see how the range for Gen 2s get hit in the winter, since most of us Gen 2 owners haven’t experienced that yet.

Also keep in mind, in winter the R1S will get close to 2mi/kWh, so your efficiency will be terrible compared to the slippery Model Y (I owned a Model Y before my R1T).

180mi/day commute at 2mi/kWh is going to cost you 450kWh/week or 1,800kWh/month which is double compared to the 900kWh/month that the average US household consumes for an entire month o_O
900 kWh is the average? Dang, my ACs alone probably use that in AZ lol

Just drove in Northern AZ in my Gen 2. Lows in the 20s. Range got murdered lol.

got my R1T on 6/25/22 and had no issues. Also live 3+ hrs from the nearest service center. I don't think range would be an issue in the cold, has never been for me and we live in the mountains in Oregon

We have ~11K miles on our Lg pack DM R1S.
We are 3 hours from nearest service center.
Only 2 minor issues so far. The cameras stopped working; but a simple reset fixed this. We also have the rear hatch click when opening.
At our 15,000 miles service I will have them fix the rear hatch. FWIW we rarely use the rear hatch as the frunk is so big and useful it is not needed.
It drives and feels smaller than it seems as well; coming from a Forrestor my wife was uncomfortable for about 2 months.

Now she tells me weekly how she loves to drive it and refuses to drive our Outback.

Do you have a climate controlled garage?
Also can you charge at work?
Edit to add; my wife drives it in the low setting as it seems much smaller when low.

I know, that's amazingly low, but many area's have small/modest homes that just don't burn that much electricity.

Love my R1S Dual motor Performance, can say it any better.... I really love this truck. With that being said there are a few issues the service center is addressing as I write this. My truck has 1 "major" issue that came about recently, water in the cabin under the front floor mats (which is a known problem on some due to AC but they are fixing it for free and giving a loaner). A few minor quirks are a cabin noise, and a mechanical fastener noise from underneath (which they are taking care of also as I write this). My biggest disappointment is the quality of the audio system, the system is passable but if your an audiophile is is sub par for the price tag of the truck and especially disappointing after getting the "premium audio" option which I do have.
Rivian provides app based support which I have used before and they were very helpful, in addition for minor things they do have a mobile based support which was also very good. The bad has to do to Rivian's service centers and the timeliness of repairs. Recently when my water ingress was discovered I got support through the app who expedited an appointment for me and said it should be 2-3 weeks to repair it roughly. When I dropped off my car I was told a month for the repair and they would not look at it for 7-10 days, which I find unacceptable. They were out of loaner cars and had Lyft pick me up and drive me to enterprise rent a car, there I met 3 other Rivian customers also waiting for cars.
Rivian is going through some growing pains and needs to get there service end up to par, hopefully you never need it or if you do they hopefully have worked out the kinks before then and improved their service centers.

Hi
I currently own a model Y with 142,000 miles on it. I commute daily 180 miles, mainly in highways. I live in upper NY where it snows and there can be snow squalls when driving in the winter, highway maintenance crews can't keep up with the 1-2 feet of snow falling rapidly. My Y works but I run in to range issues in the winter. Also I am looking for a Musk alternative. I am on the wait list for R2, so another 2 years before I get my hands on it.

We do not have a local service center, nearest one is 5 hours away. How reliable are the R1Ss? I see so many negative comments and people selling their R1S due to poor construction and support.

Please be honest. Would you recommend a used R1S 2023 for my purpose? Range [need 225 miles on a single charge at temps in the low 10s], reliability and support if needed.

Thanks.
I'm 23,000 miles in on a 2023 R1S Quad. I currently have the Goodyear Wrangler ATs that are Rivian specific. In the year and 1/2 I have owned the RIS, I have been to the service center once to adjust a few panel alignments, and I have a mobile service appointment this week because the heated seat in the second row, right side, is not functioning. That has been my only issue so far. I drove several times to the Summit County ski areas last year in sub-10 decrees, and while there was a hit to efficiency from the cold and the elevation change (the climb is up to 10,000+ feet from 5,200), after the first trip I had no range anxiety, and it is about 180 miles round-trip. IMHO, you will be fine. I would go with the pre-Gen 2 used model, though, because it sounds like there may be a few bugs in the new models waiting to be ironed out.

Other than the distance for service I would go for it. But a five hour ride to the service center means you really do not have service in your area. That’s a deal breaker in my opinion

How fast are you looking to drive? And can the vehicle be plugged in at either end?

Not sure any EV beyond a Lucid will make a ~200 mile round trip at 75+ MPH at 10F or lower ambient temps.
