Maybe they will hire Kyle next given his well documented engineering background and expertise!

I just remember when Munro made a ton of suggestions to improve Tesla's manufacturing. Elon took him up on most of those suggestions.

What you’re explaining sounds like soft-extortion. I certainly don’t think that’s what Munro is doing - in fact, youtube teardown videos are a great demand generation marketing tactic - but it did give me a pause there for a moment.
No, it’s advertising.

Yup...no more criticisms for a while.
I don't really recall too much that was critical from the Munro team during the R1T teardown. There were plenty of times when they said something to the effect of "Why use three screws here when one would do?" I don't know that I would characterize that sort of constructive suggestion as negative feedback. In general, the Munro folks seemed to be positive about the R1T, as far as I could tell. I think Rivian is looking for advice on how they can weld something once rather than twice and reduce the amounts of raw materials used in a certain subsystem by 10% or some such thing. Bringing in a consultant like the Munro team will probably be valuable in iterating the current R1 model right on the production line and preparing process improvements for the R2 platform.

I guess that answers why Munro hasn't produced any new rivian content in a while

The lack of new R1T tear down episodes are now clear. From what I have seen the R1T appears to be overbuilt.

I prefer overbuilt vs underbuilt. If I recall, Sandy bought one for himself because he was impressed by it. Hopefully his advice results in improved production rate while maintaining or improving quality.

I don’t see any downside to this. Big manufacturers (of anything) are always looking for ways to improve the efficiency of their process, as they should be. Even if all Munro does is show Rivian how they can do the same thing with the same parts more quickly, it is worth it. We are talking about a company with 98,000 orders waiting.
Sandy is an expert at simplifying and cutting costs. My only concern is that he is also a big fan of Tesla. Simplifying and cutting costs isn't always best for the consumer. Sandy is coming in from an OEM perspective. I just hope he doesn't turn Rivian into Tesla because the quality difference is night and day.

The last thing I want RIVIAN to be is like Tesla when it comes to quality or customer service. Rivian is a luxury adventure vehicle company. They need to maintain their quality. Streamline production and manufacturing, but keep the high standards please.

I absolutely agree with you. His job is to show a manufacturer ways they CAN cut costs and become more efficient. It’s Rivian’s job to decide what and how much of his advice to take. Musk apparently took all of it, but perhaps Rivian implements 75% of his suggestions and still benefits from increased production and possibly increased revenue.

We have to do this even in my industry (running a dog daycare) where there are infinite numbers of people offering business advice and purporting themselves as industry experts. It’s up to us to know how much of their advice we should take before we lose our vision for our business. I know I would have a lot more $ in my bank account if we just focused on profits, but there are many things we don’t want to compromise.

There is only so much Rivian can do at this point. The R1T truck has been designed, engineered, systems validated, robots purchased, vendors under contracts, etc.

I can see small improvements implemented on the assembly line to help Rivian shorten the time needed to assemble a vehicle and increase production rates.

I have a hunch Rivian is bringing in the Monroe team mainly to work with the "Wrangler fighter" R2 engineering and design to help with assembly efficiencies, production, etc. They can be consulted early on to avoid mistakes made with the R1T.

Someday the current batch will be commonly known on Bring-A-Trailer as the "Pre-Monroe" vin#s. The units with 5 welds instead of 2. 4 bolts instead of 1 with a lock washer. Aka...The Tanks!

And for this reason, you have my vote for the next Head of Rivian Manufacturing!

It can’t be any harder than trying to get 30 Gen Z’ers to pay attention to one thing for 60 consecutive seconds without pulling their phones out of their pockets!
