I'm continually surprised by how many people think the R1T is a true substitute for a full size truck. For me, the R1T is the outer limit size of what I would want to drive. I nearly didn't order one because I thought it might be too large. I'm also surprised so many people think it of it as a work truck and not a car with a useful bed to bring home a large box. Then again, I often have a minority opinion, so maybe Rivian just missed the mark when they explained the purpose and size of the R1T.

Easy solution - leave the kids at home and stuff the dog in the gear tunnel. ?

But I feel this post. I'm the guy who never travels with any more than one other person in the vehicle. I could count on one hand with fingers leftover the number of times I've needed a back seat. But I haul hundreds of pounds of tools & equipment every day. I'd pay real money for any EV truck manufacturer to make a short cab, long bed WT model. Really disappointed with trucks like the new Colorado that got rid of all the different cab and bed-length options. ?

Even when I get my R1T I will hold on to my F-150h for a while.
Can’t recommend this enough.

Thanks to all for the responses. It feels better knowing I’m not the only one with downsize syndrome ?

Actually am surprised that this is a discovery or that its a surprise.

Did you not know the size of R1T before purchase? You probably would feel the same effect, if you go from R1T to Maverick or Santa Cruz or Tacoma.

Yes you can say that its new truck and was not available to see early on when making the deposit. Since that time and taking the delivery, plenty of opportunity to find out if you actually find the size sufficient or not.

Personally, I don't like large vehicles so Rivian is about as big as I ever want to get. My street has 2 Lightning owners and I've looked at their vehicles up close. It's a full size truck and much larger than R1T so I get what you're saying. As a R1S future owner, glad it's not the size of Expedition (or Extinction as I call them) or Tahoe.
There really wasn’t “plenty of time and opportunity” like you suggest.

“Hey kids, come on down to the non-existent SC to take a quick spin in the R1T with the car seats and the dog!” :CWL:

I had my concerns about downsizing but was ready to take the risk of delivery due to walking into $25k (or more) of immediate equity. All I’m saying is that using the truck has highlighted the size shortcomings, and those that are on the fence should probably look elsewhere.

I'm waiting on my Lightning to replace the F-150h. I'm not sure what I'll do with the R1T other than local famers' markets

LOL. I have a $50 portable air compressor that I can use with any vehicle :)

I feel like this picture sums up the R1Ts ideal use. Great sized truck for folks with no kids, no dogs and nothing large to transport.

Rivian R1T R1S I miss having a full size truck 51F5F635-15B6-4087-AA19-67CAAAAEF7FB

I don't think you're the outlier here. Nothing about the size of the Rivian (inside or out) should have come as a surprise to anyone who is reasonably well informed. There has been ample information about both interior space and the size of the bed from a variety of sources, including Rivian themselves. I am, by any measure, a very large person with one small child and another on the way and I have no concerns about carseats or road trips.

I am feeling a little bit of this also. Currently we have a Raptor and the R1T. Kids 3 & 5. Definitively prefer the R1T for driving and stuff around town. The Raptor was our go to for drives and trips where we had to have a lot of kids stuff. Our most recent drive we took the Raptor and realized there was way less "dry" space to put things. With the R1T there tons of storage for things like that. We also have a R1S that should be in Feb-March '23 so I think we will use that as our main family car going forward.

Kids in the back seat have way more space in the Raptor but I realized I don't get as much kicking the back of the seat with the R1T because they cant reach their legs up. Dog is definitely going to be an issue. We have a Yellow Lab so there's definitely not enough room in the back seat of the R1T like there was in the Raptor. I think we are going to crate him in the bed for camping trips and stuff. Whats also nice about that is I don't have to spend 40 minutes vacuuming the inside when we bring him now....because he doesn't fit.

I also have a fairly early lightning reservation and will probably buy it to compare and see which one to keep. 90% sure its going to be the R1T.

Mine replaced a 8' bed F-250. I haven't yet been "completely unable" to do anything I could have done with the F-250. Helping a friend move did take a couple more trips than it would have in the F-250; but not significantly more - stuff fit in the front trunk and the gear tunnel to partly make up for the shorter bed. And the tonneau meant I didn't have to worry about the fact that it was raining. (Yeah, I could have gotten a tonneau or cap for the F-250; but I didn't have one on it, so that's an advantage from the factory for the R1T.)

I had a R1T for a few months. Now I have the F-150 Lightning. The way my mind operates, now that I have the Lightning, I miss the R1T, and if I had the R1T, I would probably miss the Lightning. They are similar in many ways but different enough to target somewhat different buyers. The interior of the R1T was WAY more upscale IMO, but the spaciousness and practicality of the F-150 platform has its merits. One HUGE advantage to the F-150 is practically no vampire drain. It was pretty annoying to have the battery drain as much as it did, just sitting in my garage on days I was working from home. Thats a major problem IMO.
I will say the R1T is about the closest you can get to the all around prefect vehicle. Jack of all automotive trades, master of none. But these days, with as much crap as I move, I just need a really good truck, with lots of space. I miss the R1T a great deal though.

if youre unsure about the size of the backseat, you definitely get to a SC to check it out or reach out in the forum to see if someone close to you wouldn't mind showing it off. its pretty small in the back seat of the R1T, there is no recline, entry and exit is also fairly narrow. if youre coming from a full size truck you definitely need to expect its going to be smaller back there. its a vehicle build for different use than a full size truck so be aware before you buy.

That’s why you just keep both of them. I haven’t been able to part with either and I always miss the one I’m not driving.

I’m continually surprised by people who don’t think the R1T is a capable work truck. It’s a phenomenal work truck. The gear tunnel holds ramps, short pipes, tool bags perfectly. The tie downs are far better and reachable than my Lightning. The adjustable suspension makes loading a breeze. I prefer loading the R1T over loading my Lightning.

Bottom line, If I’m alone, if I’m transporting stuff, moving big things, I take the R1T and leave the Lightning home. If im transporting my family - car seat aged, I take the Lightning.

You're kidding right?

The post March pricing is higher but by the time you pay for the sales tax and registration, AND supplies of 2ndary market of R1Ts out there, its nowhere near $25K.

So what you are saying is that you knew it was bit small and not sure if it would work but flipping. was attractive enough to go through with it....

That's fine. The original post makes it sounds like it was a shock to you that R1T is smaller than F150 and discovered it after the fact.
