^ I agree it's BS, but as you see in the KBB valuation... the VIN title year does impact resale and or trade in value. So if you have a choice like us buyers taking delivery in Dec or Jan have.. it's possibly worth waiting another few weeks to get a "year newer" vehicle.
I do agree a newer year is preferable, but I wouldn't use Tesla as a benchmark. They added a number of improvements to the Model 3 in 2022 compared to 2021 (heat pump, dual pane front glass, heated wipers, new CPU in the infotainment, etc) which make it much more desirable in the used market. If the vehicle hadn't changed at all I don't think there would have been a big difference.

Regretfully I’m going to confirm another poster’s comment on the tonneau. I have a service tech at my house updating my seats right now and according to him the word around the water cooler is the powered tonneau is getting discontinued and all power owners will be offered a manual tonneau replacement.

Important for those of us with a still working tonneau to make sure to keep it going. Also hopefully someone can provide a fix in the aftermarket.
This is really frustrating to hear but is most likely the right decision for Rivian as a company, though at some point they will not be able to continue to change the '23 "models" by further cheapening and/or removing features. The majority "hard-core" Rivian fans have their vehicles, as we head into more of a mass market mentality Rivian will have to make what they have work.

I also wonder, now that it seems the powered cover has gone the way of the tank turn, how much cavity space is wasted? Could have been more gear tunnel storage....

Yeah...this would suck! Fortunately, mine is still good and I love having it...anything else would be a definite downgrade and a disappointment...ugh...

100% same here. I’m just going to keep mine clean and lubricated. It works well and has a pretty good seal and decent noise. It actually sounded worse when I got it than it does now because I religiously lubricate it.

For those of us with a working tonneau, we'll keep our fingers crossed for a solution.

I am sure Rivian ran the numbers to redesign the powered tonneau cover along with the cost of retrofitting THOUSANDS of trucks currently in service.

This is the result of getting your vehicle to market before it’s 100% ready for production.

I’m confident that the tonneau cover engineering team raised concerns to leadership stating it may have issues down the road and the team needs more time to perfect the cover. They were overridden and this is the result of offering an $1800 option before it’s ready for prime time.

So, my configuration is Red Canyon w/the 20" AT tires and black interior. I ORIGINALLY had Limestone on order but when I finally saw it in person it was much lighter than I had anticipated and upon seeing the Red Canyon in person I liked it more so I swapped. My est. delivery date is Feb/March.

NOW; I have access to the R1T Shop which just populated quite a few more trucks and this brings me to my question......

Do I wait for my Red Canyon configuration which has NO powered tonneau cover or do I buy the Limestone which has 20" AT tires, black interior AND a powered tonneau cover?!??! Basically everything I want but preferred color.

I'm having a difficult time deciding if the powered cover trumps my preferred color. (Which I would simply wait and buy an after-market manual tonneau cover as I am not liking what I'm hearing for the Rivian manual cover; essentially individual slats....)
similar situation with regards to color. i had Limestone configured then saw it in person and it was too light for me. i would love LG but i ordered too late so its not an option. i switched to RC, just like you. difference for me is my order is the R1S.

as others stated its a personal preference thing. i will say the more i saw Limestone the better it looked over time. still lighter than i prefer, especially in direct sunlight but otherwise a great choice. my hunch is you'll be happy with either color. as for the powered cover, i think Rivian will go out of there way to make sure the vehicles that have it have a version that works. plus if you get the truck without it, you basically have this wasted space that was designed to store it so might as well get a truck that can use the space instead of having to store a manual cover in the gear tunnel or someplace else.

When I went to the factory last mid July to pick up a Red Canyon with 21s, a spare and black interior, I got to get on the catwalk above the floor where they were doing the final inspections, and all of the colors were there to see.
As luck would have it, RJ came bombing in with his blue one and two bodyguards. I honked and waved, so after he hung up his phone, came over and asked how I liked the Red Canyon color. I told him I thought it would be more red which then became awkward so he thanked me for the purchase and went his way. All of my friends love the RC color, but my strong preference would be Limestone for my next one. I also love the 21s but had a sidewall puncture in a cornfield from the now genetically engineered stalks being so stiff.
Love my vehicle. I got a good one.
The Chicago service center installed some updated toneaue parts which are working well. For security in travel, the power cover is necessary. Get that if you can.

I would get the truck with the powered tonneau. Mine still works pretty well and hoping that with some routine maintenance it will last longer than most.
