I am installing a new SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD by using one of the usb c connectors in the armrest well. How do I verify that the truck recognizes the drive? I installed the drive using the small cable that came with the drive.

Did you follow the instructions in the user's manual and then enable the Drive Cam? If it didn't recognize your SSD then you won't be able to enable it.

I did all that a couple times, I used 2 different Sandisk one is 1 TB, with speed up to 400 MB/s, the other one did not state the speed but was 1 TB also. First one said "not fast enough drive". That is why I got the one that said 400 MB/s. Both said reformatting, both got the first 2 of the 3 steps with a green check mark. Both failed the speed test. I tried both ports in the console. I do not know how to past the speed test..

It seems to me that Rivian tightened up the speed test tolerance with an update. Our Anker 3.0 usb-c card reader with a Sandisk 128GB endurance card doesn’t always pass the test. It always fails the test with a 512BG Sandisk endurance card. We purchased Kingston 3.1 readers and both pass the speed test every time. Note: all of the SD cards and readers are at least twice as fast as Rivian requires.

The Sandisk I failed with is a 3.2 Gen 1 drive performance up to 400 MB/s.
Are you going to be at the Ventura Earthday event Sat. the 20th.? I will be there showing at the EV part of the event. Wanna show a Rivian there? 11 to 4 pm...it is free parking and fun..

This weekend I bought a 1-TB Sandisk SSD, with USB-C cable and USB-A adapter, for $79.95 plus tax at Costco. I installed this "on the road," using Gear Guard screen to access the "Gear Guard Features" screen (once in Gear Guard, look on the left side of the screen for an icon that looks like three adjustment knobs). Installation took about two minutes.

To minimize cable stress, I also got a Silkland 90-degree USB-C to USB-C adapter, but it didn't arrive until after I'd installed the SSD. To install it, I went to the same "Gear Guard Features" screen, then hit "Eject." Removed the original cable, put adapter on the male end, plugged the new assembly back into the Rivian. Installing the 90-degree adapter took about one minute.

This process was WAY simpler and easier than I expected. Thanks, Costco and Sandisk!

Disclaimers: (1) I haven't tried replaying videos from the SSD yet. (2) Your mileage may vary.

Best to all!

My 128GB SanDisk Flash drive that I ordered when the DriveCam update came out has been working flawlessly, until it stopped recording everything in the last few months. I formatted it and it would no longer pass the speed test part of the formatting.

I am now running a My Passport 1TB External USB Type-C Portable SSD (WDBAGF0010BBL-WESN)

I have not had any issues with it so far, has been hooked up and running a few days now.

I am using a 2 TB, Samsung T7 Shield.

When I first tried to set it up, it would not pass the test. I tried the cable in both ports. I unplugged, replugged in both ends of the cable. Then I swapped which end was connected to the truck, the drive. It worked on my first attempt.

Technically it makes no sense, but you never know.

Any issues over the summer with the heat? I have a similar setup but am using the 1TB T7 shield.

Mine was working fine....took it out to review a video of a motorcycle washout next to me, and when I went to put it back in....no joy. So tried reformatting....said it was too slow. Tried again...same result....

Went in house to try and look up on internet....decided to just go give it a try one more time....and it worked!

Who knows....more janky software update like Apple Music.

I would like a pop up saying success, or camera storage connected or a confirmation of any kind.
