Groveland is going to be fantastic. Lee Vining was a game changer, and now you can pretty much be assured of as much exploration as you can handle on the eastern slope while not needing to overly conserve on the way up from the west.
Planning a road trip in a couple of weeks up through 120 to the meadows, over to Lee Vining to charge, disperse camp … somewhere, then up over Sonora pass, camp again near the summit, and back down 108 to recharge in Manteca.
Hello. New Forum member here. This is my first post.
I live in the vicinity of Sacramento, California. (Mediterranean climate. HOT summers. Relatively close to San Francisco, the Pacific coast, and the Sierra Nevada.)
In 2016 I decided to transition to electric vehicles.
Leased a Honda Clarity hydrogen fuel cell car from 2017-2021. (First new car, ever, and first introduction to an electric vehicle. OK car, but hydrogen fueling was very inconvenient. The hydrogen fuel infrastructure is like that of petroleum--complicated, expensive, and not really very environmentally-friendly. IMO, hydrogen is not truly ready for widespread use [for passenger cars] at this time.)
Purchased a Tesla Model X in January 2021. (I also wanted to consider the R1S at that time but, as you know, a long-range R1S would be unavailable for some time. Nonetheless, I've continued to follow Rivian.)
With a range of models now available/planned and a service center close, I recently test-drove a 2024 R1S. (Very impressed with features and overall design.)
Have used the Rivian site to "build" an R1S. (Good way to become more familiar with features, options, and accessories.)
Am now seriously considering the purchase of an R1S in 2025-26. (I've been able to eliminate the R1T, R2, and R3 as viable candidates for me.)
In the mean time, I thought I would use the Rivian Forums site to (a) study up on issues, (b) learn more about the company and its cars, and (c) ask pertinent questions.
Initial Questions (that I might/should be able to answer myself given more time)
Basic membership here is apparently free. Doe this site also have any paid subscription options (that offer more membership perks/features)?
While initially attracted to the (3 or 4) multi-motor versions, I'd probably settle for the Adventure Dual Max version of the R1S, in order to get the longest (e.g., 410 mile) range possible. Would purchasing the optional Performance Upgrade lower maximum range all the time, not at all, or only when certain driving modes (e.g., sport or off-road) were engaged?
Like many folks, I like brightly-painted brake calipers. Is there any way to pay Rivian to get the yellow calipers on a dual-motor version car? BTW, what brand of calipers does Rivian install? (The fronts look like Brembo calipers, maybe? My sales rep didn't know.)
I'll look forward to gradually becoming more familiar with the contents of this website and learning more about what seems to be an intriguing automotive company.
Just having the performance upgrade doesn't change the efficiency; it's effectively just a software upgrade. Driving in sport mode, however, will decrease your range a bit though as the rear motor remains connected. It's only about a 20 mile difference IIRC.
I don't think Rivian offers yellow calipers on dual motor vehicles. There are shops that will paint/powdercoat them a different color if you like, though they may not be able to do the Rivian logo.
I got a new tablet (Pixel) and am trying to login to the forum.
I can't log in and it tells me that my username and email don't exist.
However, my Chromebook login is just fine.
Testing the height here. Such a great vehicle. Odd coincidence, my wife and I traded in an X for this one and another couple was at the dealership and did the same trade within a matter a minutes. X for R1. #trending. Loved the X but at 165k miles it was time to move on.
