Quad is here to stay, but new version of quad can be better with Regen, power. They could also introduce locking diff, which will make it the ultimate off-road machine. The big picture is that these are minor improvements for corner cases. Bosh motor is proven. Enduro might be good, but we will have to see. It likely has bugs that need to be ironed out over time.

I think the differential thing on the QM can be accomplished via software, an Ediff vs a mechanical one since you have motors on each wheel. this won't be hard to implement.

Also If I am not mistaken the QM is designed by Rivian and built by Bosch.

My prediction is you will have 2 versions of QM in the future, a regular QM using 4 base enduro motors and a QMP using 4 P motors. This makes sense if you are looking at it from part / cost reductions. Regular QM = current price, QMP will start at $100K

Bosch GmbH is not going away. And auto manufacturers are required to support their discontinued products for 10 years of n the US. No matter what you buy, obsolescence is always an eventuality. With BEVs at least they are less hardware dependent than ICE. You’re over and under thinking it.

It’s a given Rivian will shift to in-house Enduro to improve their profitability; along with other additional vertical integration. This doesn’t mean your driving experience will be drastically different in either way. Steady march of progress is inevitable. There will always be newer and marginally better products. If you fear progress you might as well wait indefinitely.

I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on my R1s and I prefer the quad motor for all the reasons. Will Rivian move away from the Quad over time then I’m stuck with legacy tech.
I love Bosch, so for me it's a plus to have their motors in our Rivians.

I’d be shocked if the Bosch motors aren’t going away and they move to an in-house built quad. As a shareholder I’d be upset with regards to cost/profit by not doing it. It’s gonna happen, just a matter of when. That being said, i wouldnt sweat buying the current quad. Bosch motors are proven. Tech evolves, things change, whatever you buy it’ll be outdated the minute you drive it off the lot.

Has anyone actually confirmed they are switching to an enduro quad motor system? I highly doubt quad motor will go away mainly due to the the additional capability having a motor at each wheel gives the truck. The dual motor is cheaper. My guess is that Rivian may be developing an in-house quad motor system to lower their costs moving forward. I think it would be a big mistake to totally do away with quad motors.

As far as the dual motor being better off road I don't agree with that. I think it depends on what your doing and what your comfort level is with how the quad behaves. The quad does have some limitations in certain situations, but I firmly believe those can be overcome with software. The dual may be better in certain scenarios. As far as performance the quad is easily superior to dual motor. It has 170 additional HP and can do torque vectoring which provides for better on road performance.

If your looking for the absolute best performance quad is the way to go. It also has an extra 25k of warranty. If you want excellent capability with very good performance still and slightly better efficiency in all purpose for a lower cost of entry then dual motor is the way to go.

TLDR you really can't go wrong with either of them. If I had it to do over I would still go with quad.

Waiting for the in house Quad would mean waiting until 2025, if I had to guess. Will probably come with a the NACS port, new motors and potentially a new battery.

If you wait to purchase something because a new tech may come out in the future, you would buy nothing.

I sure hope not. If they did that they would have to abandon their "stay adventurous" mantra and replace it with something like "stay typical". This would also require changing all of the Rivian shirts and jackets. You could then wear a sweat shirt with "stay typical" in large letters across the front.

Most likely 2024, if rumors that Rivian is dwindling down its Bosch inventory is correct

The rumors I have heard were 2025 will bring in house quad, new battery NACS and 800V. Slight exterior changes.
NACS plug in 2025 yes, but lots of changes for 2024 including 800v battery when they do the big upgrade shutdown in Q2 2024
