I have my R1S order from Sep 22. I was fed-up with the wait time and recently got a Tesla MX 6-seater 3 weeks back. However, a couple of days back, I got an email from Rivian to configure.

Not interested anymore. However, I see the car price to come out to 84000 with all the base options.
What's the going price for a off-market new R1S? Is it worth the effort to flip it?

Not even close. The flipping of new cars days ended with COVID unless it’s a 911 or something like that.

R1S - April 2021 preorder
Definitely not if you don’t have real pre price hike pricing from pre March ‘22. About 8 months ago you could flip an R1S and make $10-15k, but not anymore.

As someone who owns a refreshed X and an R1S, I recommend selling your X and buying the R1S! Depends on your needs…

Even if you have pre-march '22 pricing, you won't make money flipping at this point. They're selling 2nd-hand for less than current MSRP. Too many people bought and tried to flip and with interest rates up and especially bad on used cars, it's just not in your favor. You just might be able to make a few bucks if you can get a Max Pack R1S in the coming weeks, maybe... Lot of brain damage for little reward, IMO.

I'm debating if I'm going to buy my R1S with the pre-march pricing. If I buy it will be the max pack and I'd probably make sure I could take delivery early next year. Which is probably what would happen if I finalized my config now. ...But something tells me I should just let the reservation go and I'll be able to pick one up in a few months anyway for a bit less. And since I don't need it anytime soon other than to just have it, I may as well just ride it out and see what happens when production normalizes and then they incorporate the NACS connector and other refinements. But I think they'll have an ultimatum for most reservation holders soon. There will have to be an order deadline. I've actually seen a few reports on various socials where some are getting pushy guides and soft ultimatums. I've had a few guide contacts over the past year, some gentle pushing to get me to the R1 shop and such. But I've always just said I was waiting for the max pack and then they'd leave me alone for a while.

@ElGuapo

thanks for the insight. Any info why you would prefer R1S over the MX?
I'm curious on his insight as well. We owned a Model X for 4 1/2 years and loved it. Sold it because it was a 2016 P90D and used car values were WAY UP with all the covid shortages and it was insane to not capitalize on that. Besides, it was just time with its older less efficient motors -- 210 miles range on a good day on a 90% charge and only v1.0 AutoPilot tech with no ability to upgrade. Old MCU which we were told could not be upgraded but Tesla did eventually offer an update. Anyway, the car was great, very happy with it overall. Ventilated seats were weak and worthless and I don't care what anyone tells you, the 3rd row is kid-sized. I personally couldn't sit safely in the 3rd row due to my torso being too long/tall. I had to force myself to slouch or lean forward with my elbows on my knees. If I sat upright, I had to cock my head to the side because of the low ceiling.

The current Model X seems real nice. I have not driven one though.

I found the 3rd row on a 6-seater MX to be surprisingly comfortable for a 5’11’ male. Of course I had to move the 2nd row forward a bit. But my wife who is 5’5’’ was on the seco d row in front of me and she was comfortable too.

Hence I jumped ship immediately to get a MX.

We had the 6 seater as well. The open space between the 2nd row seats made it much better for those with longer legs to use the third row. Of course it's usage dependent, if you have taller adults in the 2nd row as well, it all gets real cramped. My wife and I are both 5'8". She has all of her height in her legs, mine is my torso. She found the third row workable as long as she could extend a leg between those 2nd row seats. I was too tall from my butt to my head to physically sit there. I'm built like a gorilla... I buy a 30" inseam on my pants and even that seems a bit long at times, but that's pretty much the shortest out there most of the time. My shirt size is an XL tall. I'm not fat, I just have rather broad shoulders and I'm long. The key to using the third row in the Model X is the head room and if you fit. My son (6'2") and I physically can not sit there safely. Aside from being cramped/uncomfortable, not being able to sit upright without tilting my head, etc.. There's no way my head wouldn't be smashed into the ceiling in any sort of accident situation.

As for that Model X. Tesla even recommends that people 5'10" and taller should not (may not be able to) sit in that third row.

And if you bring this up on the Tesla forums, there's always the inevitable fanboy that posts a picture of John Cena sitting in the rear seat of a Model X. It's comedy gold if you take a minute to see how everyone in the car is positioned, but they will insist that big/tall people will always somehow magically fit. I get that I'm taller than average when sitting down, but I'm not unusual around these parts.

Anyway, that third row aside (I only sat back there a couple times for quick trips when we had other tall people with us), we still loved the car. May buy one again if the R1S doesn't pan out.

They are selling used for less than MSRP now. Even if you had pre march 2022 pricing you would only be able to make 1-3k depending on location. I wouldn't advise anyone buy just to flip at this point as the market is moving down.

Its an awesome truck though! They sre ramping up production, interest rates are high (especially on used), and a lot of economic uncertainty.

We bought a Rav4 Prime back in June of 2021. We love it and my wife drives it around town because with the 45 miles range on battery alone and she only drives 10 to 15 miles a day at most, it works perfectly for us. I drive the R1T since my commute is longer and I can charge for free at work.

Last year we were thinking of selling the Rav4 Prime because as a side hustle, I do laser engraving and cut and do craft fairs on the weekends. We were looking at getting something bigger to haul the product around shows. I was looking at getting a Tacoma and almost pulled the trigger on it, but decided instead to get a trailer hitch installed.

We bought the Prime XLE brand new out the door for $50k. When we were looking at trading it it last year with 25k miles on it, we were going to get $55k for it. I just had an inquiry a few weeks ago and they were going to offer me $38k. I didn't and won't sell it, but it is just an example of how the market has dropped for use cars because the supply chain has righted itself for the most part.

If you are in California, you might be able to sell it for a couple of thousand profit, but to be honest, with Rivian producing more and them not being the mythical unicorn anymore, people will be willing to wait a few months for a brand new one they configured.

Think it only makes sense if you have a pre-March 2022 configuration.

A white R1S just got sold for $94k on cars&bids last week and the owner only paid $79k for it since he had pre-March 2022 pricing.

Cars and Bids is a terrible metric for gauging market price. They only allow one or two on there at a time as an active listing and it's always one or two bidders with extra money who will pay if it's the color/config they want. In the beginning when R1's were scarce, there were people lining up to bid as it was about the only option. For some reason there are still people lining up to bid, and lining up to sell. Those people are all in some fantasy bubble of sorts. Where the rest of the world is buying and selling R1T's and now R1S's at more down to earth pricing without the auction.

Yes, if you're going to try and flip it, get it listed on Cars & Bids.

My opinion, Stay with the MX if you are happy with it. Just let the Rivian go, it does not worth the money to be beta tester, because that what we are now until the next 5-10 years.
