When I see these unused Tesla V2 chargers in West Yellowstone - and no other DC charger that's not three hours away - it breaks my heart.
FYI, there's a good DC charger in Ashton, one hour away. There are (admittedly) less good DC chargers in Island Park, 30 minutes away.

I know it does, but in this case I wasn't looking for a charger - I was looking for a bathroom and snacks and the chargers just happened to be there. It will probably never happen to me again! Usually I'm looking for the opposite when traveling: A charging station with bathrooms and food!
I’m up here now. Drove up from Vegas and my last charging stop was Chubbuck, ID. I made it to West Yellowstone with 100 mile range left. Charged, for free, at the Holiday Inn. I will be spending 2 nights in Yellowstone and hoping the paltry level 2 chargers will be enough to get me out!

You will be at "Bison speed" in the park so efficiency will be good. There are some L2 chargers in Mammoth. You can top off while getting lunch. There is also an L2 by the cabins behind Old Faithful Lodge.

In the heart of the most popular National Park in the world. Minimal EV support. RJ and Elon should be ashamed.

We should, not RJ or Elon. There are a lot of players in the space, including utilities and the gov, not just Tesla and Rivian.

There is a 175 kWh DCFC charger in Ashton 57 miles south on route 20, I used it a couple of weeks ago, there is only 1 but worked well.

V1 and V2 used CAN communication for handshake, which is legacy CHAdeMO-like. The V3 and V4 (along with SAE-CCS) use standard CCS protocol over ethernet (I believe). The Tesla V3 and V4 have hardware components that support older Teslas that can only talk via CAN.

Issue is, it requires completely different hardware that can communicate over the connector.

It's possible that Rivian could have made gen2 electronically compatible, assuming/hoping/wishing Tesla might eventually be willing to give up their proprietary CAN protocol used on < V3 stations. But I would not count on it ever happening.

This is the easiest way to locate a Supercharger you can use.

Superchargers open to other EVs are the Magic Dock stations, super Chargers open to NACS are the ones that need an adapter or NACS port.

This is the link to the page.

yeah, I know about that. I know of one completely closed Tesla supercharging station (because the gas station it’s at is being renovated) that Tesla Find Us still shows as available. Based on PlugShare reviews, it’s been closed since 8/2. Google also has about 5 reviews of this SC station warning people not to go to it Because it’s out of service. Perhaps the team responsible for updating the Tesla website were included in the the layoff of the Tesla supercharger team.

Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming are probably the most “builder friendly” states in the country. Tesla and Rivian supposably have a “horse before the cart” marketing strategy to encourage EV buyers. EV buyers are discouraged from the lack of chargers where you need them.

Tesla a Rivian are building stations at major destination corridors.

My point is that this location is the focal point for one of the most iconic destinations in the country and the only DC charger in town is an antiquated, mostly unused V2 array.

The heavy-lifting infrastructure, transformers and underground cable, is already there. Upgrade the towers - RAN or Tesla - and you have a new marketing magnet.

..and not all v3 stations have been unlocked by Tesla as well even if they can support other vehicles

Not the most popular national park in the world. Not sure what is the most popular worldwide, but in the US it’s Great Smoky Mountain National Park by a sizable margin. That area could also use more chargers, but it’s not too bad. Rivian and Tesla both have DCFC within a hour on the south side of GSMNP, and Tesla has some in Pigeon Forge, which is 30 minutes north without bad traffic. It could be an hour or more at the wrong day and time because of traffic.

Man, it's amazing that Idaho and Wyoming have such a lack of SC options. I mean, I can understand South Dakota being baren or nearly so - who goes there? (kidding! check out https://www.earthtrekkers.com/best-things-to-do-south-dakota-black-hills/).

Seriously, though, this is a crying shame. There's so much natural beauty in that part of the country. It boggles my mind that no one has stepped up to fill this need. (I'm easily boggled as you can see). I suppose it comes down to the business case, but this must surely be a case of if you build it, they will come!

Maybe what's needed is a partnership with a charging company and a chain catering to travelers. Do such things not already exist? Imagine being the first place near Yellowstone to offer modern NACS / CCS DCFC stations. EV owners would descend upon you like flies!

Perhaps not the most, but it comes in 4th behind GSMNP (obviously), Grand Canyon, and Zion; and is followed by Rocky Mountain and Yosemite. When you look at the map I think you can see why. GSMNP is out there all by itself on the East Coast whereas out West there are a lot more headliner parks competing for park-oriented tourists. GSMNP is naturally going to draw massive numbers, and deservedly so! The Everglades doesn't even make it into the top 10. Thre really aren't many national parks out east.

By "most popular" I meant "want to got to". YNP is number one on all of my foreign friend's bucket list. Four million visitors a year. GSMNP has the advantage location to major population. If you want a "where I would rather go to" survey, I think YNP would win hands down. I haven't been to GSMNP but I will put it on my "to do" list.

Grand Canyon is awesome. My wife calls Zion "Yosemite in color!"
