I mean, yeah, probably. But I still kinda feel like the windshields on these are exceptionally fragile for some reason
Quite possible. I had same issue with my 2021 Kia Telluride. Joined a forum and people confirmed it was just not me.

Now I have a 2022 Kia Telluride and I think they may have fixed the issue. I'm only 4months in but so far no chips or cracks ?

2 week old windshield. Driving on I-90 East and bam, rock hits the windshield. Immediate (but small) chip, the bigger issue is the dark u-shaped stress fracture that appeared inside the laminate layer

I’m not entirely sure what the issue is, but someone at Rivian really needs to take a hard look at their windshield/glass supplier. Because for a truck that is marketed at an outdoorsy crowd, this level of fragility in the windshield is entirely unacceptable

This is the second time it's happened to you??

If you haven’t owned a truck or other vehicle with a more upright windshield before you’re in for a treat with the number of windshields you’ll go through.

although it seems Rivian’s glass is particularly not great.

I averaged two windshields a year on my last mini.

I was gonna say this was likely the case (more upright windshield) as I owned a Lexus sedan for 15 years and only had one instance of needing a glass replacement.
No issues in my Model Y yet, but I try to avoid driving behind raised trucks with no mudguards as I figure those kicking up the most rocks on the highways. Sorry that happened though definitely frustrating.

I get a new windshield every year no matter what. Even if there are no cracks or chips, they are usually full of tiny pits from sand/ gravel - it's worth the $100 deductible to just get it replaced and enjoy a clear piece of glass for a few weeks a year. Last year I got it replaced, left on a road trip the next day and a big rock from a truck going the other direction chipped it immediately. It was big enough it made me duck when I saw it heading my way.

I don’t think one person experiencing a couple rock chips implies there’s anything particularly subpar about Rivian’s glass supplier, no offense to the clearly frustrated OP.

Look, I’m not saying there’s some grand conspiracy about Rivian buying sub-par glass just to save a few bucks. All I’m saying is, based on my experience with my previous vehicles, the R1T’s windshield seems fragile AF.

And since it’s been brought up couple times, yeah, the windshield is more upright than on my XC60, sure. But it’s no more upright than on the Range Rover I had before the Volvo. That thing took rocks multiple times, and again, never any cracks or issues

MAYBE I’ve just gotten exceptionally unlucky, and if that’s the case, fine. I’ll deal

I agree with this 100%. My Volvo was hit multiple times and no issues. I had one crack filled in my Rivian windshield already and I have two other small chips that luckily aren't spreading in 6 months of ownership.

I have a feeling the next hit will do the whole thing in.
I'm with a lot of you regarding your non-R1T experiences but if you think I am STUPID enough to take fingers to keyboard and write something that will jinx me.....you apparently are getting to know me very well!

I don't really know what happened with roads in WA, but in the past 2-3 years, I got windshield problems here.
Previously I have never had so many issues with flying rocks and debris here. I drive solid 30-40k miles a year tho...
Even with Rivian 2 weeks ago I was driving in Kirkland I-405NB in the most left lane, no one was driving around and something hit my windshield, I assume from SB traffic, I got chip too, but luckily was able to fix it myself home.

FWIW, I had the same experience in my wife's BMW X7 around 18 months where I was convinced there was some inherent issue with the glass after going through two windshields in two months. No problems since. We were just unlucky or the rocks were exceptionally lucky, depending on your perspective.

Since you have had to replace, I'm curious whether, like Subaru, Rivian wants you to use their glass with warnings against other options. When my Subaru needed a new windshield, I went 3rd party with no noticeable effect on the Subaru Eyesight system.

I don't think there's and aftermarket glass available yet, so your option is Rivian's service which took over a week once they got the vehicle to replace the windshield and now my auto wipers don't work.

Also from reading another forum thread it requires reprogramming of the computer which I assume Safelite wouldn't have access to (yet).

I replaced mine last week. I heard ping at night on the highway and noticed it the next morning. That sucker had tripled in size before I could get it repaired the next morning. A brand new windshield on this thing is $1600 installed. I'm told a good bit better than $2300 for a Range Rover

My insurance company said it had to be through Rivian b/c safelite had not sourced it yet. It took 4 days and a few days later I noticed a slight curved scratch that looks like it was done at install. Honestly if its going to chipped again......
