Initial guide call Feb 28th saying delivery could be 4 to 6 weeks out (butterflies). The next day I get the purchase agreement. I take a few days to mull over it (there's little protection for the buyer). The day after signing I'm able to complete the purchase through the website. I'm shocked when I get to step 8 (delivery) and there's an opening Friday (11 days after the initial call). I call my guide to confirm because I already have a vin! She says "yep, that’s truck".

I imagine this is what arranged marriage feels like, meeting your spouse for the first time at the alter.

Friday was cold and windy in central Texas. The truck is delivered on flat bed from Dallas. The two folks who made the delivery (field specialist) spend 2 hours going through everything. They are incredibly polite and well versed. They actually wiped everything down before delivery since it had been raining on the drive down. And despite their 4 hour drive home to their families, nothing is rushed.

Here are some gripes. I’ll preface by saying my daily driver is a 2017 Tacoma TRD off-road. This is my splurge for the decade, so I’m looking for decent value. I also think a new car company, making first impressions, should go out of its way to make everything right.

Purchase:

I signed an agreement to purchase before ever having a trade in offer. It was a low-ball offer, like 4k lower than KBB. Hard pass. Maybe they figure I'm already locked in. Or who's going to walk away at this point.

I was told I could use a credit card for the down payment if I financed. (A lot of dealerships allow up to 5k and it's nice for the points). But there wasn't an option and the rate seemed high, so wire transfer the entire amount (ouch).

I'm reminded of what the usual purchase experience is, sitting in a cubicle at a dealership, meeting all the managers, back and forth, and I immediately appreciate the online experience.

Delivery:

Seamless.

Truck:

No spare tire!! No donut, not even a jack or a can of fix-a-flat. This is unacceptable in an off road vehicle. $81,000+ after taxes, destination and fees and no spare tire! Btw, never given the option in configuration. They could have at least filled the spare void with beer when delivered.

No rf/homelink. I have two cards, a remote, a friendship bracelet, and old pixel 3. The truck communicates with everything except my garage door opener.

There's little jittery noises from the suspension and after 30 miles it pulls a little to the right. But so does my Tacoma with 70,000 miles so I'm okay with it.

I'm sure I'll have more to bitch about as time goes by, but overall I love it. With all its flaws I love it. I expected the worst and I got German quality fit and finish. It's effortless. If it had to pull the moon with some ridiculously long tow cable it could. And every time you climb inside it feels like something special.

Glad you got your truck, and maybe I'll see you on the road soon! Seriously though, no spare tire...what happens with a flat?

Enjoy the honeymoon! Where's your closest Rivian Service Center? Are you planning on having them take a look at the pulling-to-the-right issue?

Love the writing! Why do you think it’s pulling right? And do you think the suspension will work out its kinks?

Congrats!

If you just married your new truck, please don’t go to the next step.

Did you configure the truck yourself? There's clearly an option for a spare tire in the configurator...

Not sure how you didn’t have the option for a spare…

Also, there’s still hope on the RF garage door side. It seems like the hardware is there, just a matter of software enabling.

Congrats!

I know these trucks are expensive, but they probably aren't going to take you for half your stuff if it doesn't work out in a few years.

First things first, Congratulations on getting your truck!

Secondly. There has been an option for a full sized spare since the configurator launched Nov 2020, so not sure how you missed it. They also stated a spare tire would only be included where required by law, which I think is only a small number of states. Aside from that, depending on your wheel choice, you can include a matching spare for a fee. I do agree it is foolish to get one without, which is why they'll be getting that sale from me.

Anyway, I'm sure you can reach out to CS or your guide and pick one up from the service center.

Anyway, enjoy the truck, and as with anything, it'll like have the odd quirks that come up here and there.
