Key fob no longer standard?

Right, that was my point. Could you not do that if the phone is lost, or the battery dies?

I would rather lose the FOB and key card than my phone. It's just my preference to not have to carry my phone around on short errands etc. I prefer to leave it in the car.

The fob is what some brands call a "comfort remote" or similar, in that you never have to touch it at all. It just works by proximity. The key card is NFC, which requires near-contact on the door handle to unlock, and then touching it to a door panel inside to "start" the car.

Two small corrections; you only need to touch the inside of the door with the card/wristband if you wait more than 30 sec (I think that is the timeout) before 'starting' the vehicle which is actually done by pressing the brake.

This is the first I am hearing about this.. I know many don't use these physical keys but I do so this is disappointing.

What I am getting in my next Rivian still feels like a moving target which is frustrating having placed a non-refundable deposit.

I know people love the FOB and we have one for our RAV4 Prime, but since we got our R1T in May of 2023, the FOB has been in the car from the SC to home and it has been hanging up on the key holder since then.

We have our phone and we carry the keycard for when we have to valet it or take it to the service center.

Having owned our Rivian a year now and before that having used just an RFID tag for our prior car this just seems like the right decision. With PAAK you always have your key - except at home where I find myself walking to the car and realize I don’t have my phone on me… but then Siri comes in handy and I just speak out “Siri unlock my car” and it’s unlocked for me, or the kids or for what ever other reason I need to have it unlocked. It’s one less thing to have in my pocket and as a backup we each keep a key card in our wallets for the rare time I might need to hand someone a key or even rarer time my phone battery dies (only once in the last year during road trip, got photo/video recording happy).

The fob has been safely kept in storage with all our other car fobs we don’t use.

You’ll come around once you get one or any other car that doesn’t require a fob for regular use.

We have HomePods and minis around the house so it’s convenient to address Siri and either through HP or other Apple device laying around so I just need to poke my head back in the house and ask it to ”unlock my car” or “open the hood”, etc without having to go find my iPhone.

Just wanted to make a note that as of right now (1:30 pm central Feb 13th). There are R1T Key FOBs available in the Rivian gear shop. Earlier today there were also R1S FOBs but they are now unavailable.

The key fobs sell out pretty fast considering "nobody" wanted them!! It's pretty frustrating that we have to pay $500 extra for key fobs for the Rivians.

Oh yeah when I was using our oldest’s Apple Watch I always had access but being Gen1 couldn’t drive with Apple Watch.
