Good afternoon.

Hopefully this does not sound like dumb question…Is the ability to make a key active vs passive a function of the hardware in the device or software in the truck?

Specifically: The key fob is currently active to unlock truck but my tesla is passive, as is my wife’s Lexus. If rivian wanted to, could they do an OTA to make the fob a passive unlock, or would the fob itself need to be replaced?

Thanks

No one but Rivian knows for sure honestly. The way the screens read it seems like it can be a passive key, but it doesn't work that way currently.

The chipset absolutely has Bluetooth LE, and I'm 99% it uses it already for the active unlock. Should be a software update capability.

some of the menus indicate the keyfob is passive, just waiting on software

The fob would need some identification hardware. Or hardware that can be programmed to support authentication.

It has the right hardware. Texas Instruments even demoed that specific chipset in their secure lock system, along with a dev kit.

Nice. Here is to hoping they eventually make it passive entry. Would help tremendously IMHO.

Is your phone set up to auto lock/unlock? Leave your phone inside and see if the fob works like the phone. Not relevant to me, however, until we get the ability to set the sensitivity of the remote sensor....don't want the vehicle unlocking unless I'm within a foot or so...

We also have a Ford Mach-e and the passive key fob proximity feature works great. We are EV newbies and it allows the car to function in an expected and convenient way. Start walking toward the car and it sees the key and unlocks, walk away and it locks. Leave the key in the car and it beeps, leave the car “running” and get of the car with the key fob and she beeps. Super easy. Highly configurable. Wish our Rivian fob could work that way. Also, wouldn’t mind having a smaller ring on the Rivian fob for key. The large hook doesn’t strike me as secure enough for my several keys. Realized the phone key is the future, but we are old and old-fashioned and like a key fob.

The fact the fob didn't launch with walk-up/away lock/unlock functionality has me worried that Rivian is making a business decision not to do it. I worry they want to push PAAK and have intentionally made the fob less functional, as a result.

I hope I'm wrong and this is just an OTA update away.

I could’ve sworn there was a breakdown of the key fob specs somewhere that showed proximity key functionality but could be wrong. I’d bet the same, they’re pushing PAAK as a priority so they’ll issue software updates to try to improve it instead developing/enabling a proximity key.

It definitely had the hardware to support this functionality.

So the fact that you can drive the truck with the key fob and don't have to tap it anywhere (like the key cards) suggests there are proximity sensors, they just aren't enabled to unlock or lock the truck I presume?

The FOB, like your phone, uses Bluetooth LE for proximity detection. In theory, and as demonstrated by the chipset manufacturer, the FOB could act just like your PaaK with regards to proximity lock/unlock. Why it doesn't, only Rivian knows for sure.

I wonder what we can expect key fob battery life to look like. I think my X5 uses BLE for its fobs. Just changed the battery in my primary fob after 2.5 years.
