One thing for sure, Rivian wants to maximize sales and deliveries.
Yes. People are always failing to look at this from Rivian's point of view.
They need to get NEW customers, and lots of them. They need to generate buzz, and lots of it.
You don't do either of those by limiting sales ONLY to existing Rivian owners or by selling ONLY to people who happened to know about the R2 two and a half years ago.

There are more first-day reservations than they can ship this year. So what should they do?

Fulfilling ONLY the first day orders made by existing R1 owners would mean failure of the R2 launch and perhaps failure of the company.

You might argue that they will sell the same number of vehicles this year either way, but it's not about what happens in the next few months, it's about how they grow R2 into the future. If you spend the next 6 months to a year delivering only to those first-day R1 owners, then you will exhaust your customer base and R2 sales will fall to zero. If you don't sell to new customers, then anyone who hears about the R2 now or sees one in their neighbor's driveway or is shopping around for a vehicle in this category will basically lose interest when they're told they can't get it for another 1-2 years because they weren't smart enough to know about it two and a half years ago. They'll buy a different vehicle and not consider Rivian again until years down the road when they need their *next* vehicle.

So I don't know what the secret formula is for selecting order invites, but they do seem to be pulling in a lot of new people and a lot more recent reservations. And we can see at least one part of the strategy at work, which is prioritizing only one order per person - if you have reservations for more than one R2 you might get an invite for one while the other is pushed back to the Dec-Feb, that's something that allows more people to buy a vehicle, and the customer base is an important number as well. I'm sure geographical location plays a part as well, for many reasons (SC capacity, shipping costs and times, demographics of potential EV buyers, etc.)

It's clear however that the premise of this thread is wrong. Rivian is far, far from exhausting its list of reservations, and is clearly doing some forward thinking to ensure that its supply of customers grows over the next years. Whether their strategy makes sense to you or not, Rivian has managed to so far do something that few automakers have ever done in at least 50 years - navigate between having an interesting prototype into being full-blown manufacturer. That road is littered with failures and double failures (looking at you Fisker) over the past decades. And since they have shown they can do that, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and say they know better than me (or just about anyone else) what it takes to do that.

I will probably never try to get on another Rivian reservation early again. It was false hope that I’d get an invite based on the fervor of how quickly I could click over to reserve while watching the announcement. I could’ve made about $3 of interest on that $100 by now 😂

haven't they been pretty transparent that it isn't FIFO?
Not really. Not that i'm complaining, but they initially announced R1 owner priority. Then it became a short term random lotto to test the order backlog. Then it went back to R1 owner priority, but it's still some sort of mix with new customers. Then it was service center distance factored in. Then it was expiring lease priority. So you take all of that into a blender and that's what Rivian is doing now. 🤣

They never really said anything about it, on purpose. The assumption is FIFO without any clarity given initially.

Look, I'm not mad, I'm being a bit sarcastic. But you can see plenty of people mad about being early reservers not getting any attention.

I was/am one of those angry people. I got the order to invite a couple days before our (SO and I) decided "cutoff point" (where we give up on Rivian and go with the Subaru Trailseeker). Then our trade-in value dropped $600 between the time I ordered, and the time I could lock in the trade-in amount (delivery scheduled). So we're still a little upset about losing out on that $600 from having to wait so long.
And yes, day 1 reservation within the first 15-30 mins... thought that would help. Had Rivian waited even a little longer, they would've lost a customer. I feel like I was pretty patient for somebody losing trade-in value as time went on.

Day 1 reservation holder but I responded "Not Really" to LE interest since I'm waiting for Lidar in 2027
and wondering if they'll do a Tri-motor

Good synopsis @sparked. That's it.

I hear you on the trade-in value.

I just got a text earlier today from the Hudson, NH SC (45 minutes away), telling me I could pick up my Esker Silver, black interior R2 on 9/11 (of all dates 🙄). The VIN is 73xx.
I was a first day reservation holder, but not a Rivian owner. Pretty pumped.
Hopefully I'll find a buyer for my 2024 X3 in the next two weeks, haha. I hate having a car sit out in the driveway. I would love to have just traded it in, but the Rivian offer was about $6k below a fair price 😕

None of that is true. They were not sequential. They all were factors with various weighting at the very same time.

Funny, but the Carmax offer for my Subaru Crosstrek plug-in hybrid keeps going up. (It only has 23,000 miles on it).

So what you are saying @Zathras is "none of that is true," but it is all true. Got it.

I think it has a lot to do with their capacity to fulfill orders vs. who is on the list. There’s likely a mix of new/old customers for randomness listed by others above.

I received an offer to order (first-day reservation and currently own a Rivian here) earlier this month but waited for CC interior to drop. I also picked Esker silver and told by the website “this config isn’t available yet.” Rivian does batch building and I think they are using people like me to help plan which batches will be in what order and how big said batches will be. I think those paying for paint colors will likely stand a faster chance of delivery (paint is a high margin for Rivian).
