While nothing is certain, I think Rivian may have more an obligation to the pre-orders than you might believe. They would not engage in this dance otherwise… by capitulating in March, sending out the $100 “binding” contracts.. I think the matter more complicated.. which makes their strategy make more sense.. IMHO, anyway.

Rivian team doing happy dance!! One less sale at a loss, " it's working boss, they dropping like flies"
Don't need to worry about customer retention when you've got all that IPO money covering your eyes and plugging your ears.

I pre-ordered the Cybertruck Dec. 1, 2019. Tesla stated the Cybertruck will have 500+ MILES. Inside info has stated the Cybertruck may be available with 610 miles range...!!!
And Rivian CANNOT EVEN MAKE A 400 MILE+ MAX PACK...
....... I'M REALLY PISSED...!!!.......
It’s hilarious that people are complaining there is no max pack yet, and using the theoretical Cybertruck as a comparison, which isn’t even being produced. Just go ahead and make more imaginary claims.

Rivian’s leadership must do cartwheels every time Cybertruck production gets delayed.

Most likely because they can make 3 large packs from the cells it takes to make to make 2 max packs. Every EV manufacturer is in some way, shape or form is cell constrained at this time so they're likely trying to make as many vehicles as they can with the limited amount of cells they have available.
The Large pack is 135 kWh with 15 kWh modules while Max pack is assumed to be 180 kWh or Large + 3x 15 kWh modules. So you'd actually make 4 Large pack for the same batteries in 3 Max pack trucks.

It would be nice if Rivian was more forthcoming about the Max, but as a public company, and a new one at that, there are pretty tight constraints to what they can reveal without adversely impacting share price. I suspect that we won't really know what their solution for the Max is until sometime late next year.
In the latest Rivian Stories video Tony said they planned to reveal more information about Max Pack in the next couple weeks. Conveniently that's after the 9 November investor call, but I'm going to assume we'll here something before the end of November. I'm not planning to make any changes until they release this additional info.

Of course there's engineering needed. Even if they were to stick with the 400V system they need to make the physical pack larger, revise the BMS calibration, and a host of of things things. That said, I'm almost certain at this point it'll be on the 2nd gen 800V platform which means a lot more changes. To boot, from what we've heard previously the Bosch motors are 400V, so they'd have to use the new Enduro motors that have only (at least announced) been tested in a single-motor drive unit configuration...i.e. for the Dual Motor + Max Pack configuration. My very speculative guess is they don't have dual-motor Enduro drive units at all yet which would be why Quad Motor + Max Pack has been delayed again.

I was not aware that information was coming, because Rivian didn’t tell me! I only found out by seeing the Rivian stories interview after the fact, which I only dug up because I saw it mentioned in passing in some thread or other.

If someone is not an active subscriber to Rivian stories or is not on that forum, there‘s a very good chance they don’t know more max pack information is imminent. I know now some max pack people got an email mentioning that was coming, but I didn’t. So annoyed.
