Nicely summarized. But bring out all the chicken littles that declare the sky is falling, Rivian is failing, this is the end of the world, blah blah blah because of one obviously bad but random QC human error.
The bigger issues are the issues we see on the internet as repeating. A random wrong snap in component now and then is really not that grievous, like you say.

yeah that's not ok. at least not ok without a heads-up from your delivery specialist. I found lots of little issues on mine after a couple of weeks that should have been caught in pre-delivery QC, but this is just embarrassing (if true). I think Rivian needs to add a page to the pre-delivery SC inspection checklist.

If you look back on this thread no one said anything about the sky falling or the end of Rivian. It is an embarrassing but ultimately easily fixable issue.
What is more of a concern, as others have said, is the repeatable issue such as panel alignment (hood to fender), wheel alignment and steering wheel alignment. These should have been consistently fixed by now. This is, in part, why the SCs have long wait lists - that costs Rivian money and potentially reputation.
Most people seem to get that since even the most ardent fans (most of us are fans here but some more than others) haven’t commented or tried to defend this.

Rivian originally wanted to make a mix-engine sports car, then autonomous ride sharing vehicles, then pivoted opportunistically to EDVs, trucks and SUVs. Now they want to make bikes. Even after given two extra pandemic years to refine manufacturing, it’s still hit and miss. They don’t have focus and their reach can sometimes exceed their grasp. Their main talent seems to be designing cars which are way more expensive to manufacture than competing automakers would stomach.

I’m sure they noticed it but decided to fix it only if the customer complained. They probably didn’t give sufficient consideration to the possibility it would end up on a forum/social media platform though. Just dumb on Rivian’s part.
How can you be "Sure" Rivian noticed it. I am thinking exactly the opposite. They didn't notice it because their QC is still learning how to do QC correctly.

That's the point. This error should have been the easiest to catch, but it wasn't. What about all the errors that are hidden and/or aren't easy to catch?

Monroe has been apparently consulting with Rivian to cut assembly costs. But improving first time quality would result in much greater savings (by reducing rework costs) than eliminating $3 twelve volt outlets.

I agree

I agree improving first time quality, either on the factory floor or at the gate QC would save time, money and reputational damage. Let’s see how things go (and improve hopefully) as they start their third year of manufacturing later this year.

My sentiment as well.

Breaking. Footage showing Tesla factory quality control has been leaked for the first time...

Who's old and Eastern European enough to know what brand of car that is? ?
