To be clear, I wasn’t advocating diy, but paying someone with liability insurance and certifications… and who knows things like what you pointed out.
It's a $500 charger. You can get some chargers with rebate from utility company in some places. With the cost of paying electrician, it makes no sense to remove it. If they damage it, deduct from their deposit.

$800. I’m just saying to simplify it or provide the means for a renter to easily provide their own solution. I would replace it with a simple, “dumb” charger that doesn’t use an app or rely on WiFi since you don’t always know what the renter is going to do in that regard (unless it’s a vacation rental where you still control everything). I wouldn’t want to have to walk a renter through setting up an app or connecting the charger to their WiFi network.

It was $500 back when I bought it and IDK why anyone would pay $800 for it, now that Rivian will update the port to NCAS sOOn. Chargers from utility are in $300 range and Tesla ? is around $500.

If you do capit, put in in a junction bos at minimum. Capped open wires are a no no for safety and liability.

My Tesla Wall Charger is purposely set to be as dumb as it gets. Have no use for Wi-Fi or app. Works flawlessly with my Rivian and Teslas, of course.
Paid $450; my local utility cut me a $300 thank-you check for installing it.

That said, were I a renter, can't think of any single most basic reason why I ever would ask you, landlord, to take down your charger so I may go out purchase and install my own, lol.

I think we are in agreement and it sounds like you have a solution (probably the best, if it’s their universal charger) for op. As for the second half, people are dumb, but I wasn’t imagining that scenario. I was imagining where you have tenants come in and they want to use the charger, but want/need to install an app to use all features or they bring their own WiFi provider and now they need to connect the charger… my take is just that simplicity is the best route.

Another option would be to install a 14-50 and let them run their own solution, if they want one at all. I know hardwire is always better, but… I’d rather give renters a plug than an expensive piece of advanced equipment. If they know what they’re doing, they will be stoked to have that plug and if they don’t (or are idiots), you will have to answer a bunch of questions on how to set it up, how it works, what it is, and then they’ll break it… and blame you.
Winning answer right here.

Install an outlet, check, make sure that outlet is EV-rated, check, plug, unplug, plug, unplug forever if renter has an EV, increased chance of things going wrong, thermal issues at outlet...all to save a few bucks and risk burning down home. Penny wise, what is it again?

Just checked the Rivian shop to see about this Rivian charger. $800. $800!!!!
WHAT A RIPOFF SCAM. Whoever owns a Rivian charger, you've been had. Perhaps you realize this already.

Tesla Wall Charger, bulletproof, works flawlessly with both Tesla and Rivian and likely everything else, $450.00. Local utility $300 rebate check, total cost: $125.

I see you’ve had renters before. Or just pessimistic about humans. I’m not saying you’re wrong.
I’m definitely not pessimistic about other humans in general, but I’ve learned that NOBODY ever washes a rental car. It’s a good rule of thumb to know that no one will ever care for your stuff like you do. Just sayin’. Sure, there’s exceptions.

Keeping $350.00 in my pocket, and having a great piece of equipment installed to accomplish the very same thing and in a very extremely reliable way... for $350 less. Keeping more money in my pocket always feels awesome, but, hey, just looking out for number one here.

My god, that is awful!
$800 for a charger. What a scam, indeed! Good lord.

I paid $500 for mine two years ago, so I’m fine with my purchase and I’ve kept my soul.

I'm moving in a few months and will be renting out my old house. Wondering should I just leave the Rivian wall charger at the rental house, take it with me to the new house and install a cheaper charger at the rental house. Or can I take the charger and "cap off" the wires for that circuit (and leave the breaker off). Not sure that's the best idea since who knows what renters will turn on and off.
Leave it, then buy a Tesla HPWC for the new house.
