I'm moving in a few months and will be renting out my old house. Wondering should I just leave the Rivian wall charger at the rental house, take it with me to the new house and install a cheaper charger at the rental house. Or can I take the charger and "cap off" the wires for that circuit (and leave the breaker off). Not sure that's the best idea since who knows what renters will turn on and off.

No not paying the electric, the renters will be. Guess I'm just a bit emotionally attached to the Rivian stuff but I shouldn't be. Would probably get a Tesla Universal charger at the new house.

Take the charger with you, why spend extra $$$ unless you just want a reason to buy a new one. Turn off and lock out or, pull the breaker/s and cap & cover the exposed EVSE leads.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Leaving it there is both the easiest thing to do for you, and the nice thing for the renter.

If I was renting, I'd be stoked to discover an L2 EVSE available in my new place.

Another option would be to install a 14-50 and let them run their own solution, if they want one at all. I know hardwire is always better, but… I’d rather give renters a plug than an expensive piece of advanced equipment. If they know what they’re doing, they will be stoked to have that plug and if they don’t (or are idiots), you will have to answer a bunch of questions on how to set it up, how it works, what it is, and then they’ll break it… and blame you.

I see you’ve had renters before. Or just pessimistic about humans. I’m not saying you’re wrong.

I'd leave it. It's a feature. Might make the rental more valuable, to the right renters.

Maybe lock the breaker off (google "circuit breaker lockout") so people can't mess around with it without authorization?

Most hardwire EVSE installations have 3 wires (hot, hot, ground) run to them. A 14-50 outlet requires 4 wires (hot, hot, neutral, ground). DO NOT install a 14-50 outlet without a neutral wire!!! Install a 6-50 outlet instead or just cap the wires and cover the junction box.

To be clear, I wasn’t advocating diy, but paying someone with liability insurance and certifications… and who knows things like what you pointed out.

Rivian charger is garbage. I’d remove it, cap off or install a socket, sell it, and buy a Tesla universal for the new house.

If yours leave it and they use it, you’d be on the hook for maintenance of it if something goes wrong (unless you say otherwise in the lease). With the issues I’ve had with mine, I wouldn’t mess with it anymore IMO.

It is a permanent fixture. You can't just remove it and take it with you.
Take light fixtures also and cap them off, sinks, toilets, etc.?
Or you perhaps can take it down, remove all cable connections, conduit, leave everything the exact same way it was before installing it, then off you go. Then put house up for rent.

Do you plan on returning to that home in the future? Either way, I'd leave it, easiest solution. We've had the same discussion about our current home, I'm likely to leave in a couple years but want to rent out and return to this area/home after that tour.

Are you taking the appliances with you? Those are more costly and safer, electrically speaking.

Tomorrow is a great time to buy a new charger for the new place at a discount!

Leave the house vacant and PM me the address. No reason...
