But it is highly unlikely they are magic batteries, and are much more efficient when compared to the long range pack.

With the only difference being the battery pack, it is reasonable to expect the efficiency to be the same between the two trucks. I don't think it is reasonable to expect the max pack truck to be more efficient than the large pack truck, unless someone can point to some great breakthrough only Rivian has discovered.
I agree. I thought it does use some additional space in R1T and that is the reason we have not seem R1S in max. I thought due to the third row seat in R1S, it wouldn't be able to accommodate more cells. I am interested in R1T max teardown now ;-)

Why do they not allow the quad-motor with the max pack?
Cost. The current quad motors are sourced from Bosch and (presumably) much more expensive than their in-house designed motors (Enduro) which are used in the dual.

Congratulations Mine is about 4 to 6 weeks away! Can you feel the additional weight?
Right. For the extra bit of range, the cost and weight penalty seems not worth it. YMMV.

I love how everybody is upset that additional $10,000 for more range.

But you can buy a set of tires, pay for a different color and almost be 75% of the way for the price. But some how that's okay?

Do we all bitch and moan about anything that makes a vehicle more expensive? Look at what a brake upgrade on a Porsche cost and get back to me.

Congrats! That's awesome. Can we get a screenshot of the settings display showing 'max pack'? Not that anyone doesn't believe you, we just want to drool over it, LOL. ?

Saying we don't feel it's a good value for what we get isn't bitching. I'm no stranger to spending money for additional options. I spent 5K on my wife's car order just so she could get the color purple that she wanted on her i4 M50. For me that was worth it, because she really wanted that car but in a color they didn't offer any other way. An extra couple miles of range isn't worth the 10K for me because it's not enough range to solve the towing issue, and I don't need even a little bit extra for daily driving as the standard is more than enough for me.

Truthfully I could easily get by with a smaller pack day to day as I charge to 70% and in a day I'm rarely below 50% when I plug back in. So that's why I don't think the max pack is a worthwhile purchase for what it costs because I don't feel I get 10k's worth of value out of it. An extra thousand or two and I'd probably buy it just because but that's all the range you're getting IMO. This is coming from someone who buys plenty of shit the average person would find excessive.

I agree. If you don't want to pay $10k for 20 more kWh, don't. Who cares? If it isn't worth it to you, don't do it. Why complain about it?

I am still considering if it is worth it to me. 180 kWh would have definitely been worth $10k. I think 20 kWh is probably worth it to me, but I am going to monitor this forum for real world results and see what others report. Then I will decide. It isn't a clear decision yet for me.

For sure I am not interested in the large pack. When I replace my MME, I need a significant increase in range or I am not doing it. The max pack in theory does offer that, plus off road capability I don't have now. Which I really, really like.

I can't wait for the tear downs and real world results. Bring it!

I paid for Forrest green because my first 1995 Jeep Cherokee 2 door was almost the exact same color!

Why do they not allow the quad-motor with the max pack?
my guess is the range. we know the R1S gets slightly less miles than the R1T. id guess that the R1T barely made 400 and the R1S was not going to make it. at that point they probably thought it wasn't worth selling it and customers/market complaining.

also worth noting is at some point they said the max pack wouldn't be available in the R1S. id guess it was because they couldnt fit the extra batteries, when it was originally intended to be 180 kwh, or they would have had to make a reconfigration of the chassis for the R1S which they probably decided wasn't worth the cost and change to their production process. with their current solution, they can offer max pack for both the R1S and R1T and use the exact same setup to make production simpler.

again, these are just my guesses. so.... ?

Porsche seem to be experts at nickel and diming you into thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in more options just to get features that are standard on a Mazda 3.

@jmchilders - congratulations! If you have a moment, can you confirm that the rear seats still fold up on the driver's side and there is storage available? I know it's supposed to just be a chemistry change so this should not have been impacted, but curious.
